Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team fell 22-16 to UW-Whitewater in a battle of ranked teams Thursday night at Kachel Gymnasium. The Eagles, ranked fifth in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, fall to 11-4 on the season and 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), while the 20
th ranked Warhawks improve to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.
UWL took an early 8-0 lead after victories by major decision by
Ryan Weinmann over Zac Denny (15-5) at 125-pounds and
Dustin Weinmann over Joseph Brodman (12-0) at 133-pounds.
Ryan Weinmann is ranked fifth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) at 125 while
Dustin Weinmann is ranked sixth.
UW-Whitewater responded, taking the next four matches. At 141-pounds, UWL's
Grant Sutton dropped a 6-4 decision to second-ranked Matt Adcock before
Mason Geary fell by decision (8-6) to seventh-ranked Isaiah Vela at 149-pounds.
Michael Murnane was defeated by fall (2:39) by Brandon Arteaga at 157-pounds and
Derek Weinmann lost a 6-2 decision to ninth-ranked Tom Gerszewski at 165-pounds, and the Warhawks led the match 15-8.
UWL took two of the next three matches. A 5-3 decision by UWL's fifth-ranked
Tyler Schneider over Connor Price at 174-pounds pulled the Eagles to within 15-11. After
Alex Friedman dropped a major decision (12-4) to Nicholas Bonomo at 184,
Zach Tooley beat Bowen Wileman by technical fall (19-0, 4:58) at 197 to make the score 19-16 in favor of the Warhawks going into the final match.
The heavyweight battle featured sixth-ranked
Clay Broze from UWL and Jordan Festge from UW-Whitewater. Broze led 6-1 in the third period before Festge scored a takedown and a near fall to lead 7-6. Broze escaped to tie the match 7-7, but a takedown by Festge in the final moments secured the 9-7 decision at 285-pounds and the team victory for UW-Whitewater at 22-16.
UWL returns to action on Saturday, January 23 hosting Wheaton College (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m. and Lakeland College (Wis.) at 2 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
