Women's Basketball Falls Late to UW-Stout

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 71-68 to UW-Stout Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles drop to 6-10 overall and 0-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils improve to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference. 
 
The Eagles trailed by as many as ten points early in the fourth quarter, but went on a 14-3 run to lead 64-63 with 3:33 remaining on a Elise DeNoyer jumper.  Sarah Schoch scored to put the Blue Devils back up one before back-to-back layups by DeNoyer and MaKenzie Miller put UWL ahead 68-65 with 2:06 left.  A Shannon Watkins free throw for UW-Stout cut it to 68-66, and then Bailey Diersen tied the game at 68-68 on a jumper at the 1:14 mark.  Kyleigh Hebert hit a three pointer with :29 left to give UW-Stout the lead at 71-68. After a pair of missed Blue Devils free throws, Rachel Atchison had two attempts to tie it in the final seconds, but both shots were off the mark and UW-Stout held on for the win. 
 
The first quarter started with a UW-Stout 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Jenna Goldsmith with 8:23 remaining.  UWL answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 7-6 with 5:23 left after a DeNoyer layup.  The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period, and the Eagles led 22-20 after one. 
 
UWL led by as many as six points in the second quarter.  A three pointer by Atchison made it 31-25 at the 4:19 mark, and the Eagles led 33-27 with 3:10 left after a Kimmy Johnson layup.  A 7-2 run by UW-Stout to end the period made it 35-34 at the half.
 
The third quarter featured three lead changes and three ties, but a 8-0 run by the Blue Devils in the final 2:54 gave them a 56-48 lead going into the final period.    
 
UWL shot 38.6% from the floor, including 20%(two-of-ten) from three point range, and 63.2% (12-of-19) from the free throw line.  All five starters for the Eagles scored in double-figures, led by DeNoyer with 14 points.  Miller had 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.  Jenna Anderson had eleven points, four steals and three assists.  Maggi Bishop added ten points and nine boards, while Atchison scored ten and had three assists for UWL.   

UW-Stout shot 45.0% from the field, including 38.9% (seven-of-18) from three-point range, and 52.6% (ten-of-19) at the line.  Hebert led the Blue Devils with 14 points and six assists.  Sarah Schoch added 13 points while Goldsmith scored 12 and pulled down six rebounds. 

UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 24 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
