La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 37-6 dual victory over UW-Oshkosh Friday at Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, ranked fifth in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, improve to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans drop to 3-8 and 0-4 in the league. The victory for UWL was the 25
th consecutive win over UW-Oshkosh.
UWL took a 9-0 lead after a win by forfeit by
Nelson Baker at 125-pounds and a win by decision (6-4) from
Quinn Miracle over Dellas Vandenburg at 133-pounds.
UW-Oshkosh won the next two matches to close the gap to 9-6. At 141-pounds, Levi Smith won by decision (8-1) over UWL's
Garrett Dziedzic while Mark Choinski defeated
Qarin Johnnic by decision (7-0) at 149-pounds.
The Eagles took control of the match at 157-pounds, with
Michael Murnane earning a win by major decision (12-4) over Nate Arquinego.
Andrew Dayland also won by major decision (21-8) over Lance Arendt at 165-pounds, and the Eagles led 17-6.
"Quinn had a good win for us at 133," said UWL coach
Dave Malecek. "And I felt like
Michael Murnane did a good job of attacking the whole time in his match."
Fifth-ranked
Tyler Schneider got a win by decision (9-4) over Parker Knueppel at 174-pounds, followed by a win by technical fall (17-2) from UWL's
Alex Friedman over John DePersia at 184-pounds, making the score 25-6.
UWL closed out the match with a pair of wins by fall.
Zach Tooley defeated Chris Yaros (1:52) at 197-pounds before sixth-ranked
Clay Broze finished the night with a victory over Eli Burdick (2:23) at 285-pounds, giving UWL the 37-6 victory.
"I thought our upper weights did a great job tonight," said Malecek. "Tooley and Broze wrestled really well with pins at 197 and heavyweight."
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 16 at the Cornell College (Iowa) Matman Invitational in Mount Vernon, Iowa starting at 9 a.m. The Eagles will also host UW-Platteville at 1 p.m.
