Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 48-38 to 20
th0ranked UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Titans improve to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
UWL took an early 4-3 lead after a
Maggi Bishop jumper with 7:30 remaining in the first quarter. UW-Oshkosh finished the quarter on a 10-1 run to lead 13-5 after one.
In the second quarter, the Titans grew its lead to as many as 12 points on a Marissa Selner free throw with 4:00 left. The Eagles were able to cut the lead to nine going into halftime with a
Rachel Atchison layup in the closing seconds of the period to make it 22-13 at the break.
The Eagles opened the third on a 7-2 run capped by a
Sierra Watrud jumper to cut the lead to four at 24-20 with 8:34 remaining, but the Titans answered with a 7-0 run to lead 31-20 at the 6:23 mark. UWL scored eight of the next 10 points to again cut the lead to four at 33-29 after a Bishop layup with 1:43 left, but a three-pointer from Kendell Truttman with :43 remaining gave the Titans a 36-29 lead at the end of three.
UWL got as close as five points in the fourth quarter on two occasions, first on a jumper from
MaKenzie Miller with 5:34 left that made it 38-33, and again at 4:48 remaining after a Bishop free throw made it 39-34. A 7-0 run from UW-Oshkosh put the game out of reach over the next four minutes, and it held on for the 48-38 victory. The 38 points was a season-low for the Eagles.
UWL shot 31.9% from the field, including 33.3% (one-of-three) from three-point range, and 58.3% (seven-of-12) at the free throw line.
Jenna Anderson led UWL with eight points and four assists while adding two blocks and one steal. Miller, Bishop, and Watrud each added six points, and Miller led the team with nine rebounds.
Elise DeNoyer added seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked 20th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, shot 28.6% from the field, including 20.0% (three-of-15) from three-point range, and 59.1% (13-of-22) at the line.
Alex Richard scored 10 points and added 14 rebounds for the Titans. Taylor Schmidt led the team with five assists.
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 16 at eighth-ranked UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m.
