Baseball Team Earns Doubleheader Split at UW-Oshkosh

Alex Cordova had four hits, three runs and three RBI in Friday's doubleheader.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a split of its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at Tiedemann Field.  The Titans took the opener, 6-5, before the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 8-3.  UW-L, receiving votes on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, is now 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh is 9-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

In the opener, the Titans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Tyler Kozlowski scored on Andy Brahier's single.  The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second.  Travis Buxton-Verstegen singled to start the inning and moved to second on Ben Morgan's fielder's choice. Alex Cordova followed with a single to score Buxton-Verstegen to tie the game at 1-1.  Cordova advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Bryce Barsness' RBI double to give UW-L a 2-1 lead.

UW-Oshkosh tallied three runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 advantage. Jacob Pohlman scored on Noah Polcyn's double to tie the game and Polcyn later scored on a UW-L throwing error for a 3-2 lead.  John Eagan later scored on a Kozlowski single to make it 4-2.  The Titans added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh on as Eagan came in on Brahier's sacrifice fly for a 5-2 advantage.

UW-L tied the game at 5-5 with three runs in the top of the eighth. Taylor Kohlwey tripled to start the inning followed by a Joel Zyhowski walk.  Justin Anderson then knocked in Kohlwey with a single to cut UW-Oshkosh's lead to 5-3.  After a Titans' pitching change, Buxton-Verstegen's sacrifice bunt advanced Zyhowski to third and Anderson to second.  Morgan then followed with a two-run single to tie the game.

The Titans scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  Eagan singled to start the frame and advanced to third on Jameson Lavery's failed pickoff attempt.  Kozlowski then walked and UW-L's Jameson Sadowske came into pitch.  Robbie Kleman was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Eagan was forced out at home on Brahier's fielder's choice for the first out of the inning, but Logan Reckert's single drove in Kozlowski with the winning run.

Jameson Lavery (0-1) suffered the loss, pitching 3.2 innings in relief.  He allowed four hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out seven.  Joe Miller started for UW-L, going 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts.  UW-L committed six errors in the game.

Seven different players had a hit for the Eagles.  Morgan had two RBI.

Jesse Sustachek (2-0) picked up the win for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 2.0 innings in relief.  He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two.  Matt Sabel started for the Titans, going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and four walks with seven strikeouts.

Eagan finished 4-for-5 with two runs while Kozlowski went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Brahier had two RBI.

In the nightcap, UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  Kohlwey and Eric Vatch opened the game with back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 lead.  Vatch then stole third and scored on a UW-Oshkosh throwing error to make it 2-0.  The Titans came back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1 as Eagan scored on Kozlowski's RBI groundout.

The Eagles added to their lead in the fourth inning.  Cordova singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After Barsness fouled out for the first out of the inning, Zyhowski singled home Cordova for a 3-1 lead.

UW-L scored four runs in the top of the fifth.  Buxton-Verstegen and Morgan singled to start the inning and both came into score on Cordova's two-run triple to make it 5-1.  Zyhowski's sacrifice fly scored Cordova for a 6-1 lead and Barsness later scored on Kohlwey's infield single.

UW-Oshkosh cut the deficit to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth with Kleman scoring on a Reckert single.  Each team scored a run in the eighth. Buxton-Verstegen singled with two outs for UW-L in the top half of the inning and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt.  Morgan then followed with a single to score Buxton-Verstegen.  UW-Oshkosh scored its run in the eighth on Kleman's solo home run.

Ben Cejka (3-0) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk with two strikeouts. Jake Stern went 1.2 innings, allowing one hit while striking out two.

The Eagles totaled 14 hits in the nightcap as Morgan finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI and Cordova went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Kohlwey, Buxton-Verstegen and Zyhowski each had two hits with Buxton-Verstegen scoring twice while Zyhowski had two RBI.

Adam Rude (1-1) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, going 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk with two strikeouts. UW-Oshkosh had five errors in the contest.

Eagan, Kleman, Brahier and Reckert each had two hits for the Titans.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, April 7 hosting seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at Copeland Park.
