Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team, ranked 24th on this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top-25 Poll, earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles won the opener, 7-2, and the nightcap, 4-3. UW-L improves to 22-10 overall and 15-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Superior drops to 5-28 overall and 1-17 in the conference.
UW-L has won 10 straight games over UW-Superior and 15 of the last 17 meetings. The Eagles earned a pair of wins Saturday, April 25 by the scores of 4-2 and 7-0.
In Sunday's opener, UW-L took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Alex Cordova opened the game with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. After
Taylor Kohlwey walked,
Justin Anderson's sacrifice fly scored Cordova with the first run of the game.
Ben Morgan singled to advance Kohlwey to third, who then scored on
Shane Adler's sacrifice bunt for a 2-0 lead. Morgan scored on a
Bryce Barsness single to finish the inning.
The Eagles added to their lead with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 advantage. Morgan and Adler hit back-to-back two-out doubles in the third inning while Kohlwey's single scored
Travis Buxton-Verstegen, who doubled to start the fourth to make it 5-0. Buxton-Verstegen added a two-out RBI double in the fifth to bring in Barsness for a 6-0 lead.
UW-Superior cut the margin to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on Brady Flaherty's RBI single and Jordan Koepp's RBI on a fielder's choice.
UW-L took a 7-2 lead in the seventh inning as Morgan doubled to start the inning and later scored on a Barsness' double.
Caleb Boushley (3-1) earned the win in the opener for the Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk while striking out three. Seven starters had at least one hit for UW-L as the team finished with 13 overall. Morgan went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Barsness finished 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Kohlwey and Buxton-Verstegen each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
Christian Hall (2-1) took the loss for the Yellowjackets, going 6.1 innings, allowing 13 hits, seven runs and two walks with one strikeout. Flaherty finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the nightcap. Cordova doubled to start the game again and scored on Anderson's single. UW-Superior tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth with Jacob Irlbeck scoring on a Greg Pitts double.
The Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of fourth to lead 3-1. Barsness singled to start the inning and advanced to second on
Joel Zyhowski's sacrifice bunt.
Seth Feldman's single moved Barsness to third, who then scored on a
Eric Vatch safety squeeze to give UW-L a 2-1 lead. Cordova followed with a two-out single to knock in Feldman.
The Yellowjackets tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs. Seth Wage scored on an Eagles' throwing error to cut the lead to 3-2 and Kyle Bellin came in on a Matt Vold single to tie the game.
UW-L took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Feldman singled with one out and advanced to second on a Vatch sacrifice bunt. Cordova's RBI single scored Feldman with the go-ahead run.
Logan Mallek (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Eagles, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out four.
Jameson Sadowske registered his eighth save of the season, going 2.0 innings, retiring all six batters he faced. Sadowske's eighth save ties UW-L single-season school record of Cory Anderson set in 1997.
Troy Kenkel started the nightcap for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (one earned) and one walk with seven strikeouts.
The Eagles recorded 13 hits in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader as Feldman finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Cordova went 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run. Anderson finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and Barsness went 2-for-4 with one run.
Jake Lewis (0-7) suffered the loss for the Yellowjackets in the nightcap. He pitched a complete-game, going 8.0 innings, allowing 13 hits, four runs and three walks while striking out five. Damian Wiblin finished 3-for-4 while Pitts and Vold each went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 29 at UW-Platteville for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
