Baseball Team Ends Spring Trip with Win; Kohlwey Ties WIAC Record

Taylor Kohlwey has a hit in 48 of his last 49 games.
Box Score Winter Haven, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 5-2 victory over The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles went 6-2 in the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational.

UW-L's Taylor Kohlwey tied a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record Saturday as he extended his hitting streak to 37-games.  He ties the conference record of UW-Stout's Brad O'Connell, who had a hit in every game from April 28, 2000 to May 5, 2001.  Kohlwey, who started his hitting streak April 6, 2014, finished 3-for-5 in Saturday's win.  He has at least one hit in 48 of his last 49 games dating back to last year.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Joel Zyhowski was hit-by-pitch to start the game and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt.  After a UW-L strikeout, Zyhowski advanced to third on a passed ball and scored after Kohlwey reached on a Lions' error.  UW-L made it 2-0 in the second inning.  Ben Morgan started the frame with a single and moved to second after Nate Roethle walked.  A sacrifice bunt from Nic Barnes moved the runners into scoring position and Zyhowski's sacrifice fly knocked in Morgan.

UW-L added two runs in the top of the sixth.  Alex Cordova walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a groundout and stole third.  He came in on Roethle's RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.  Barnes then singled and stole second with Roethle stealing third.  Zyhowski's second sacrifice fly scored Roethle to make it 4-0.

The College of New Jersey cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Josh Limon singled and Mike Murray both scored on a two-run double from Matt Facas.

UW-L added a run in the top of the ninth to make it 5-2.  Kohlwey singled with one out and advanced to third as Justin Anderson reached on a College of New Jersey error.  Travis Buxton-Verstegen's sacrifice fly scored Kohlwey.

Joe Miller earned the win for the Eagles, going 5.2 innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts.  Jameson Sadowske earned the save for UW-L, pitching 2.0 innings with one strikeout.

Along with Kohlwey ending 3-for-5, Morgan went 3-for-4 for the Eagles with an RBI.  Cordova finished 2-for-4 with a run.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, March 25 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in the Eagles' home opener.  Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park.
