Box Score Winter Haven, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 5-2 victory over The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon. The Eagles went 6-2 in the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational.
UW-L's
Taylor Kohlwey tied a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record Saturday as he extended his hitting streak to 37-games. He ties the conference record of UW-Stout's Brad O'Connell, who had a hit in every game from April 28, 2000 to May 5, 2001. Kohlwey, who started his hitting streak April 6, 2014, finished 3-for-5 in Saturday's win. He has at least one hit in 48 of his last 49 games dating back to last year.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Joel Zyhowski was hit-by-pitch to start the game and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. After a UW-L strikeout, Zyhowski advanced to third on a passed ball and scored after Kohlwey reached on a Lions' error. UW-L made it 2-0 in the second inning.
Ben Morgan started the frame with a single and moved to second after
Nate Roethle walked. A sacrifice bunt from
Nic Barnes moved the runners into scoring position and Zyhowski's sacrifice fly knocked in Morgan.
UW-L added two runs in the top of the sixth.
Alex Cordova walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a groundout and stole third. He came in on Roethle's RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Barnes then singled and stole second with Roethle stealing third. Zyhowski's second sacrifice fly scored Roethle to make it 4-0.
The College of New Jersey cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Limon singled and Mike Murray both scored on a two-run double from Matt Facas.
UW-L added a run in the top of the ninth to make it 5-2. Kohlwey singled with one out and advanced to third as
Justin Anderson reached on a College of New Jersey error.
Travis Buxton-Verstegen's sacrifice fly scored Kohlwey.
Joe Miller earned the win for the Eagles, going 5.2 innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts.
Jameson Sadowske earned the save for UW-L, pitching 2.0 innings with one strikeout.
Along with Kohlwey ending 3-for-5, Morgan went 3-for-4 for the Eagles with an RBI. Cordova finished 2-for-4 with a run.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, March 25 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in the Eagles' home opener. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park.
