Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 77-68 to the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 3-4 on the season while the Spartans improve to 2-3. The all-time series is now tied, 3-3, between the two teams.
UWL raced out to a 11-2 lead with 6:26 left in the first quarter after a
Jenna Anderson jumper. The Eagles led 13-4 with 4:22 remaining in the quarter when the Spartans ended it with a 8-2 run to cut the lead to 15-12.
Dubuque (Iowa) took its first lead of the game with 1:03 remaining in the first half on a Kara Enos jumper. After
Sydney Kannel's jumper with :36 left gave UWL a 26-25 advantage, Braana Steen's three-pointer gave the Spartans a 28-26 halftime lead.
The Spartans led 35-33 with 8:33 remaining in the third quarter and went on a 19-6 run to lead 54-39 with 2:11 left. The Eagles responded with a 9-0 run to cut it to 54-48 with :13 remaining in the quarter on a
Sierra Watrud layup. Emily Brinker hit one-of-two free throws for Dubuque (Iowa) with :02 left to give the Spartans a 55-48 lead.
Brinker's three-pointer with 7:38 remaining in the fourth quarter made it 63-53 for Dubuque (Iowa). The Spartans later led 67-57 with 5:19 left, but the Eagles' 9-1 run cut the lead to 68-66 with 2:14 remaining. UWL could get no closer as Dubuque (Iowa) finished the game scoring nine of the last 11 points.
UWL shot 31.2% (29-of-93) from the field, including 20.0% (four-of-20) from three-point range, and 50.0% (six-of-12) at the free throw line. The 93 field goal attempts is tied for third in single-game school history. UWL had a school record 102 field goal attempts (42 made) versus Mt. Senario College (Wis.) November 24, 1996.
UWL outrebounded Dubuque (Iowa), 65-38, Wednesday night. The Eagles had 36 offensive rebounds compared to the Spartans' eight. The 65 rebounds is tied for sixth in single-game school history while the 36 offensive rebounds is second in single-season school history. UWL had a school record 73 total rebounds versus UW-Green Bay January 23, 1976 and a school record 38 offensive rebounds versus Mt. Senario (Wis.) in 1996.
Rachel Atchison led four players in double figures for the Eagles with 15 points while Anderson finished with 14,
Maggi Bishop with 12 and
Cameron Chapin with 11. Bishop,
Elise DeNoyer and
MaKenzie Miller led UWL with 10 rebounds each with Bishop recording her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career.
Dubuque (Iowa) shot 45.6% (26-of-57) from the field Wednesday, including 39.1% (nine-of-23) from three-point range, and 61.5% (16-of-26) at the line. Steen led four Spartans in double figures with 22 points and eight rebounds while Brinker finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Abbey Meyer totaled 13 points while Allison Biermeier had 10.
UWL returns to action Saturday, December 12 hosting Carthage College (Wis.) at 3 p.m.
