Women's Basketball Defeats Coe in Home Opener

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 75-66 victory over Coe College (Iowa) Saturday night in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.  The Eagles, playing in their home opener, improve to 3-2 on the season while the Kohawks fall to 2-1.

The first half saw 10 lead changes. Coe (Iowa) led by as many as four points in the first half while UWL led by as many as three.  The Kohawks took a 29-27 halftime lead on a Mickey Hansche jumper.

Coe (Iowa) led 36-32 with 6:55 left in the third quarter after a Hansche three-pointer, but UWL used a 14-3 run to lead 46-39 with 1:36 remaining on a Kara Selk jumper.  Rachel Atchison scored eight points in the run for the Eagles.  UWL Led 48-41 at the end of three quarters.

UWL opened the fourth quarter on a 9-3 run to 57-44 after MaKenzie Miller made a pair of free throws.  The Eagles hit their first three shots from the field to start the quarter.  Coe (Iowa) cut the margin to 61-52 with 5:36 remaining on a Courteney McCrary three-point field goal, but the Kohawks could get no closer the rest of the game as the Eagles went on a 8-2 run to lead 69-54.  UWL led by as many as 16 points in the second half.

UWL shot 38.6% from the field, including 38.9% (seven-of-18) from three-point range, and 70.0% (14-of-20) at the free throw line.  The Eagles shot 60.0% (six-of-10) from three-point range in the second half.

Atchison led the Eagles with 20 points off the bench Saturday, going six-of-10 from three-point range and two-of-two at the line.  Maggi Bishop finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Cameron Chapin recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Jenna Anderson had eight points, five assists and four rebounds while Miller finished with seven points and game-high 13 rebounds.

"We played a solid second half," said UWL head coach Lois Heeren.  "Once our shots started to fall and we made some stops on defense, we really played with a lot of confidence."

Coe (Iowa) shot 39.3% from the field, including 34.8% (eight-of-23) from three-point range, and 45.5% (10-of-22) at the line. 

Hansche led Kohawks with 22 points, finishing seven-of-12 from the field, including four-of-eight from three-point range, and four-of-six at the line.  Jenna Lehman finished with 15 points while Aleena Hobbs had nine points and team-high 10 rebounds.

UWL returns to action Sunday, November 29 hosting Cornell College (Iowa) at 3 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.
