Wrestling Team Sweeps Wheaton College Duals

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked fifth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll, earned a pair of wins at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Duals Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles defeated the University of Dubuque (Iowa) by the score of 30-3 and host Wheaton (Ill.) by the score of 39-3.  UW-L improves to 15-3 on the season and extended its winning streak to six straight.  The Eagles captured 18 of 20 matches Saturday.

In the 30-3 win over Dubuque (Iowa), the Spartans took a 3-0 lead as Joey Cisneros won by decision (5-4) over Ryan Weinmann at 125-pounds.  The Eagles took the next nine matches.  Dustin Weinmann, ranked 10th in the NWCA, tied the dual at 3-3 as he won by decision (10-7) over Nicholas Rivera at 133-pounds.  UW-L's Austin Schoen made it 6-3 with a win by decision (3-2) over Dubuque's (Iowa) Stephen Rosenberg at 141.

Kasey Einerson, ranked second in the NWCA at 149-pounds, earned a win by decision (10-3) over ninth-ranked Brian Travis for a 9-3 advantage.  Derek Weinmann followed with a win by major decision (11-1) over Adrian Collier at 157-pounds to give UW-L a 13-3 lead.

Tyler Schneider and Alex Friedman recorded back-to-back wins by decision (8-2) for UW-L as Schneider defeated Terry Kubski at 165-pounds and Friedman beat Manny Mendoza at 174.  Schneider is ranked sixth in the NWCA. UW-L's Richard Carlson, ranked fifth in the country, gave the Eagles a 22-3 lead wiht a win by decision (9-2) over Elton Turnage-Manuel at 184-pounds.  Eric Twohey, also ranked fifth in the NWCA for UW-L, earned a technical fall (18-3, 7:00) over Nathan Cristion at 197-pounds to make it 27-3 and Zach Tooley finished the dual with a win by decision (4-3) at Daniel Howell at 285-pounds.

In its 39-3 victory over Wheaton (Ill), UW-L also took nine of the 10 matches. Ryan Weinmann opened with a win by decision (8-4) over Carlos Fuentez at 125-pounds followed by Dustin Weinmann winning by technical fall (16-0, 5:50) over Tom Foy at 133.  Schoen received a forfeit at 141-pounds to give UW-L a 14-0 advantage.

Einerson made it 20-0 as he won by fall (1:59) over Campbell Morton at 149-pounds.   Derek Weinmann won by decision (10-5) over Mark Savenok at 157-pounds and Schneider followed with a win by decision (9-7) over Stephen Aiello at 165-pounds to give the Eagles a 26-0 lead. 

Wheaton (Ill.) earned its lone win at 174-pounds as Frank Aiello won by decision (4-0) over Jarrett Hoeppner.  Carlson won by decision (4-3) over Dan Olsen at 184-pounds to give UW-L a 29-3 lead.  Twohey earned a win by major decision (10-1) over Mikey Swider at 197-pounds and Tooley won by forfeit at 285-pounds.

UW-L returns to action Thursday, January 22 hosting second-ranked UW-Whitewater at 6:30 p.m.
