UW-L Drops Twinbill at Second-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse dropped a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contests at second-ranked UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon at University Field.  The Pointers, ranked second on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll, took the opener, 4-3 in 10 innings, and the nightcap, 11-9.  UW-L drops to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point improves to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

In the opener, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Taylor Kohlwey opened the game with a walk and advanced to second after a Pointers' fielding error.  He later scored on Adam Cordova's groundout.  The Eagles made it 2-0 in the top of third as Kohlwey scored on a wild pitch.

UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third on a Brandon Kranz sacrifice fly.  Each team scored a run in the fourth with Nic Barnes scoring a Josh Rowles double for the Eagles while Taylor Carlson scored on a Bobby Gregorich groundout for the Pointers.

The game remained 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth.  Carlson opened the inning for UW-Stevens Point with a double.  He was replaced by pinch-runner Ben Gerber.  After Cody Hanke flied out to left field, Gerber advanced to third on a wild pitch.  He then scored on Harry Steldt's single to force extra innings.  The Pointers scored the game's winning run in the bottom of the 10th.  Casey Barnes singled to start the inning followed by a walk to Kyle McHugh.  Both runners moved up a base on Jimmy Coady's groundout.  Pinch-hitter Bryton Guckenberg was intentionally walked to load the bases and Hanke followed with a single down the right field line to score Barnes with the winning run.

Travis Kruckow suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing two hits, one run and three walks.  Joe Miller started the Eagles, going 8.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk with seven strikeouts.  Travis Buxton-Verstegen went 2-for-5 as the Eagles were held to five hits.  Kohlwey scored twice.

Luke Watson earned the victory for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 6.0 innings, allwoing three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.  Kranz went 2-for-3 as the Pointers were held to eight hits.

In the nightcap, UW-L scored twice in the top of the second inning to take an early lead.  Buxton-Verstegen walked to start the inning followed by a Joel Zyhowski single.  Jake Paulson's bunt moved both runners into scoring position.  An RBI groundout from Barnes scored Buxton-Verstegen for a 1-0 lead and Zyhowski later scored on a wild pitch.

UW-Stevens Point trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second on Gregorich's RBI single.  Kohlwey tripled to open the top of the third for UW-L and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 advantage. The Pointers tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings to force a 3-3 tie.  Coady had a sacrifice fly in the third while Clint Rose had an RBI groundout in the fourth.

UW-L took a 8-3 lead with five runs in the top of the fifth as Cordova hit a grand slam and Zyhowski's double scored Buxton-Verstegen.  UW-Stevens Point cut its deficit to 8-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Hanke's two-out two-run home run.  The Pointers tallied five runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-8 lead.  Rose and Coady each had an RBI single while Kranz had an RBI groundout.  Hanke later doubled to break an 8-8 tie.

The Pointers added a run in the seventh to make it 11-8 on a Rose single to score Gerber, but the Eagles cut the lead to 11-9 in the top of the eighth as Bryce Barsness singled to knock in Rowles.

Jameson Lavery took the loss in the nightcap for the Eagles, pitching 0.2 of an inning.  He alloed three hits, three runs and one walk with one strikeout.  Jake Stern started, going 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs (six earned) and one walk with three strikeouts.  Kohlwey, Zyhowski and Rowles each finished 2-for-4.  Rowles scored twice while Kohlwey and Zyhowski each had one run.  Zyhowski also had an RBI while Cordova finished with four RBI.  Buxton-Verstegen scored twice.

Tyler Flood picked up the win for the Pointers, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and one walk with one strikeout.  Hanke went 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI while Rose went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.

UW-L returns to action Monday, April 7 with a doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point starting at noon.
