UW-La Crosse Completes Season Sweep of UW-Platteville

Seth Feldman went 5-for-8 with five RBI and three runs in Wednesday's doubleheader.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team completed a season sweep of UW-Platteville with a pair of victories Wednesday afternoon at Copeland Park.  The Eagles won the opener, 11-4, before winning the nightcap, 13-0 in seven innings.  UW-L improves to 21-13 overall and 13-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Platteville drops to 8-27 overall and 5-17 in the WIAC.  The Eagles defeated the Pioneers, 12-3 and 13-2, April 9 in La Crosse.  UW-L has won 16 of the last 17 meetings with UW-Platteville.

With Wednesday's victories, UW-L extended its overall winning streak to 10 games.  The Eagles are averaging over 13 runs and nearly 17 hits per game in their winning streak.

With its 24 runs in Wednesday's doubleheader, UW-L set a single-season school record with 351 runs scored, breaking the record of 339 set in 2000.  The Eagles also set a single-season school record for RBI with 307, surpassing the mark of 304 also set in 2000. The team has tied the single-season school record for triples with 17, tying the mark from 1979 and 2009.

UW-L has now won at least 20 games in four straight seasons.

In Wednesday's first game, the Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Seth Feldman's single scored Joel Zyhowski to give UW-L a 1-0 lead.  Taylor Kohlwey followed with a two-run single knocking in Josh Rowles and Jordan Greenland.  The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Bryce Barsness two-run home run to take a 5-0 lead.

UW-L added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 9-0.  Zyhowski scored on Feldman's sacrifice bunt to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead while Kohlwey's knocked in Rowles and Barsness added an RBI groundout for a 8-0 advantage. UW-L's final run scored when Timmy Kehren, who had reached on a walk, attempted to steal second base and stayed in a rundown long enough for Kohlwey to cross the plate.  The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth with Travis Buxton-Verstegen scoring on a sacrifice fly by Rowles.

UW-Platteville got on the board in the top of the seventh inning with four runs.  Colin DeBoer and Tanner Galeazzi each hit RBI singles for the Pioneers while two other runs scored on Eagles' errors.

Zyhowski drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to finish the scoring.

Jameson Lavery (4-1) earned the victory for UW-L, throwing 6.0 innings while allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five.  Every starter had at least one hit for the Eagles as the team finished with 17 overall.  Kohlwey went 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI while Zyhowski finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Barsness went 2-fore-6 with two runs and three RBI.  Cole Cefalu, Rowles and Feldman each had two hits.  Rowles scored twice while Feldman had two RBI.

Nathan Fay (0-4) recorded the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing 10 hits, five runs (four earned) and one walk with two strikeouts. Todd Wienkes went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Pioneers.

In the nightcap, UW-L batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring nine runs on seven hits.  Cefalu got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly to knock in Kohlwey, who had doubled to start the inning.  Buxton-Verstegen and Rowles each had an RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.  Feldman's three-run double made it 6-0.  Kohlwey hit a two-run home run and Barsness followed with a solo home run to finish the scoring.  UW-L scored eight of its nine runs with two outs.

The Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the second as Buxton-Verstegen and Alex Cordova scored on a Pioneers' throwing error.  Rowles scored on a wild pitch and Cordova an RBI single to finish the scoring in the bottom of the fifth.  

Shane Adler (3-1) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  The Eagles finished with 15 hits in the nightcap as eight of nine starters had at least one hit.  Feldman went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Zyhowski finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Kohlwey, Cordova, Buxton-Verstegen and Rowles each had two hits. Kohlwey, Barsness, Buxton-Verstegen and Rowles each scored twice while Kohlwey had two RBI.

Jonny Frese (0-3) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 0.2 of an inning.  He allowed five hits, seven runs and one walk.  Four different players had a hit for the Pioneers.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, May 3 at Copeland Park hosting UW-Oshkosh at noon.
