Baseball Team Earns Victory over Carleton College

Travis Buxton-Verstegen went 2-for-3 with four RBI Wednesday night.
Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 13-5 victory over Carleton College (Minn.) Wednesday night at Copeland Park.  UW-L improves to 15-13 on the season while Carleton drops to 18-11.  It was the Eagles second win over the Knights this season after earning a 15-1 victory March 20 in Tucson, Arizona.

Carleton took an early lead, plating three runs in the top of the first inning.  After a Jeff Dsida walk, David Stillerman and Hayden Tsutsui singled with Dsida scoring on Tsutsui's hit.  Stillerman scored on a UW-L throwing error to make it 2-0 and Kevin Johnson later scored on an RBI single by Willie Freimuth.

UW-L was able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs.  Taylor Kohlwey led-off with an infield single.  After back-to-back walks to Joel Zyhowski and Cole Cefalu, Alex Cordova reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error with Kohlwey scoring.  Cefalu later scored on a groundout by Travis Buxton-Verstegen.  

The Eagles tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third when Zyhowski scored on a passed ball.  

The Knights took a 5-3 lead with single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. Nolan Baker scored on a sacrifice fly by Dsida in the fourth inning while Tsutsui scored in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Johnson.  

UW-L took a 6-5 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Buxton-Verstegen's single scored Cefalu to cut the lead to 5-4 and Jordan Greenland's two-run single knocked in Cordova and Buxton-Verstegen for a 6-5 lead.  The Eagles added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 9-5.  Cordova's sacrifice fly scored Kohlwey for the first run of the inning followed by a two-run single from Buxton-Verstegen to knock in Cefalu and Zyhowski. 

The Eagles scored four insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Seth Feldman executed a squeeze play to score Greenland to make it 10-5.   Kohlwey's single scored Josh Rowles while Bryce Barsness added a pinch-hit double to knock in Feldman.  Kohlwey later scored on a sacrifice fly by Cefalu.

Jameson Lavery (3-1) recorded the win for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings.  He allowed six hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks while stirking out three.  Jameson Sadowske picked up his first save, going 4.0 innings while allowing one hit with five strikeouts. Seven of nine starters had at least one hit for the Eagles. Buxton-Verstegen went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored.  Kohlwey went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI while Zyhowski finished 2-for-3 with two runs.  Greenland went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Cefalu scored three runs. 

Thaddeus Gregory (2-3) took the loss for Carleton, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, six runs (four earned) and five walks with two strikeouts. Tsutsui went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI while Baker finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 26 hosting UW-Superior in a WIAC doubleheader starting at noon at Copeland Park.
