Baseball Team Earns Sweep at UW-Stout

Cole Cefalu had three home runs and 10 RBI in Tuesday's doubleheader sweep.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout Tuesday afternoon at Nelson Field.  The Eagles took the first game 17-10, before winning the nightcap, 12-5.  The Eagles improve to 14-13 overall and 7-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Stout drops to 17-12 overall and 7-7 in the WIAC.

UW-L has now won 11 of the last 12 meetings with UW-Stout, including a four-game season series sweep this year.  The Eagles earned a doubleheader sweep, 16-6 and 7-3, April 1 in Mauston, Wisconsin.

In Tuesday's opener, the Eagles were able to take a lead in the top of the first inning.  Joel Zyhowski reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Cole Cefalu.  UW-Stout tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Brady Burzynski.

UW-L was able to score two runs in both the second and third innings on a pair of home runs.  In the second, Jordan Greenland hit a two-run home run to score Timmy Kehren.  In the third inning, it was Cefalu hitting a two-run home run to score Zyhowski for a 5-1 lead.

After a scoreless top of the fourth, the Blue Devils cut into the Eagles' lead by scoring twice on a Charlie Meyer home run to cut UW-Stout's deficit to 5-3.

UW-L scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 11-3 lead.  Taylor Kohlwey doubled to star the inning and advanced to third on Zyhowski's single.  Zyhowski then went to third on a wild pitch.  Cefalu's single scored Kohlwey and Zyhowski to make it 7-3.  Cefalu later scored on a Kehren single and Greenland's three-run double made it 11-3.

UW-Stout cut the lead to 11-7 with four runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth.  Jack Schneider and Burzynski led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  Schneider scored on a single by Nick Nalbach.  After another single loaded the bases, Meyer hit a single to right center to score Nalbach and Burzynski.  Kasey Kruse followed with an RBI-single to score Ryan Freitag.  UW-Stout scored four runs on six hits, none of which went for extra bases. 

UW-L added a run in the top of the seventh on Greenland's RBI single.  The Eagles added five more in the top of the eight inning. Kohlwey and Zyhowski led off with back-to-back singles.  Cefalu singled to plate Kohlwey.  Zyhowski was able to score from second when a wild pitch advanced him to third and a throwing error by the catcher allowed him to score. Cefalu later scored on a wild pitch and Seth Feldman added a two-run single.  

UW-Stout added three runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Schneider doubled to score Brett Vavra and Jake Lunow scored on a groundout by Burzynski.  Schneider came around to score on a passed ball later in the inning.  

Joe Miller (1-3) earned the victory for UW-L, going 5.0 innings while allowing 11 hits and seven runs with two strikeouts.  Travis Kruckow pitched 4.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits and three runs (one earned).  Cefalu finished 4-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored while Greenland went 3-for-6 with one run and six RBI.  Kohlwey finished 3-for-5 with two runs while Zyhowski went 3-for-5 with four runs.  Cordova, Kehren and Josh Rowles each had two hits as the Eagles finished with 21.

Hayden Bowe (2-1) took the loss for the Blue Devils, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and eight runs with one strikeout. Adam Widder pitched 3.0 innings, giving up eight hits, eight runs (five earned) and one walk while striking out two.  Schneider went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Burzysnki, Freitag and Meyer each had two hits.  Meyer finished with four RBI.

UW-L never trailed in the nightcap, scoring four times in the top of the second inning.  Greenland led-off with a single and advanced to third on a double from Kehren.  Greenland scored on a bunt single by Rowles for a 1-0 lead.  Feldman followed with a sacrifice bunt to knock in Kehren.  After a Kohlwey single, Zyhowski's double scored Rowles and Kohlwey.

The Blue Devils were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Charlie Pelzer singled to score Meyer.  

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Cefalu led off the inning with a solo home run and Travis Buxton-Verstegen later scored on a Greenland single for a 6-1 lead.  UW-Stout cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a Burzynski home run.

UW-L scored four times in the top of the eighth.  Rowles scored on a Zyhowski single while Cefalu hit a three-run home run. Freitag's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-3.

Both teams scored twice in the ninth inning with Kohlwey hitting a two-run single for UW-L while Burzynski had a two-run single for UW-Stout.

Ben Cejka (4-2) earned the win for UW-L, pitchign a complete-game.  He went 9.0 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and four walks while striking out three.  Cefalu went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two home runs and two runs scored in the nightcap for the Eagles while Kohlwey and Zyhowski each finished 3-for-6 with a run scored.  Kohlwey had two RBI and Zyhowski three.  Greenland and Rowles each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Patrick Gullickson (2-1) recorded the loss for UW-Stout, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs and two walks. Burzynski finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run.  Meyer went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 23 hosting Carleton College (Minn.) at 7 p.m. at Copeland Park.  The Eagles earned a 15-1 victory over the Knights March 20 in Tucson, Arizona.
