Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 3-1 to UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon in the opening game of a doubleheader at Copeland Park. The game was halted in the top of the sixth inning with the Warhawks leading 5-1, but play reverts back to the end of the fifth with UW-Whitewater leading 3-1. With the loss, UW-L falls to 11-12 overall and 5-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Whitewater improves to 18-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
Play was set to resume Monday, April 14 starting at noon with the second game to follow, but weather conditions cancelled action.
UW-Whitewater took a 2-0 lead in Sunday's game in the top of the third inning as Michael Gonzalez and Casey Power drew bases-loaded walks.
UW-L cut the lead to 2-1 in bottom of the third when
Cole Cefalu scored on an RBI groundout by
Joel Zyhowski.
The Warhawks made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth as Mikole Pierce scored on Power's single.
Ben Cejka (3-2) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and seven walks with one strikeout. The Eagles had eight hits in the contest with seven of nine starters registering at least one. Cefalu finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Scott Plaza (4-1) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, going 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, one run and one walk with three strikeouts. Six different players had a hit for the Warhawks. Power finished with two RBI.
UW-Whitewater is ranked 10th on last week's American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll.
UW-L returns to action Monday, April 21 at St. Olaf College (Minn.) in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
