Baseball Team Drops Doubleheader to UW-Whitewater

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a doubleheader to UW-Whitewater Saturday night at Copeland Park, losing 5-1 and 11-3.  The Eagles fall to 11-11 overall and 5-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks improve to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference.  UW-Whitewater is ranked 10th on this week's American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll.

In the opener, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Kyle Haen scored on Mikole Pierce's groundout.  The game remained 1-0 until the top of the eighth when the Warhawks tallied four runs.  Haen and Jared Fon singled with one out and scored on Dylan Friend's three-run home run for a 4-0 advantage.  Pierce followed with a solo home run to make it 5-0.

UW-L scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth.  With one out, Taylor Kohlwey was hit-by-pitch followed by a Bryce Barsness single.  Cole Cefalu struck out with Kohlwey and Barsness stealing and Kohlwey scored after a UW-Whitewater throwing error by the catcher to cut the lead to 5-1. 

The Eagles put their first two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but failed to score after a strikeout and double play to end the game.

Joe Miller (0-3) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 7.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and one walk with five strikeouts.  The Eagles were held to five hits in the opener as Joel Zyhowski went 2-for-3.

Brock Liston (5-0) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, going 8.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run (unearned) and two walks with eight strikeouts.  Haen and Fon both went 2-for-4 with Haen scoring twice.  Friend finished with three RBI and Pierce two for the Warhawks.

In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Fon scored on a balk and Pierce had an RBI single.  UW-L cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Cefalu singled and scored on Alex Cordova's double.  The Warhawks' led 3-1 in the top of the fifth after a Casey Power single.

UW-Whitewater batted around in the sixth inning scoring six runs for a 9-1 lead.  Friend hit his second three-run home run of the doubleheader.  Power had an RBI double, Trey Cannon an RBI single and Mike Mierow a sacrifice bunt for an RBI.

UW-L tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to make it 9-3.  Seth Feldman's groundout scored Travis Buxton-Verstegen in the sixth while Cefalu's groundout knocked in Kohlwey in the seventh.

The Warhawks finished the scoring in the ninth on Power's two-run single.

Jake Stern (1-1) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk with one strikeout.  Kohlwey finished 4-for-5 with a run scored for the Eagles while Cefalu, Cordova and Rowles each had two hits.

Curtis Morgan (4-0) earned the victory for UW-Whitewater, going 7.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, three runs and one walk with five strikeouts.  Friend went 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI while Power finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored. Fon, Pierce and Michael Gonzalez each had two hits.

UW-L returns to action Sunday, April 13 hosting UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader starting at noon at Copeland Park.
