Baseball Team Drops Pair of Games to Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team opened its 2014 season with a pair of losses at the D3 Midwest College Classic Friday night at ONEOK Field.  The Eagles fell 8-7 to Buena Vista University (Iowa) in their opening game before losing 4-0 to The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) in their second contest.

In the opener versus Buena Vista, UW-L took a 5-0 lead after two winnings.  Starting pitcher Shane Adler helped his own cause with a two-run single in the top of the first to score Taylor Kohlwey and Cole CefaluAlex Cordova later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.

The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the second as Nic Barnes scored on a throwing error and Kohlwey hit an RBI single to knock in Josh Rowles.

Buena Vista cut its deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning as Devon Harms scored on a Brandon Weesels single.  The Beavers made it 5-3 with two runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Jeremy Lambert and Weston Foxx.

Buena Vista took its first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to lead 6-5. Nick Schlecht cut the lead to 5-4 on a run-scoring single and Tanner Truesdell's sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5.  Joe Paletta followed with an infield single with two outs to score Schlecht with the go-ahead run.

UW-L came right back in the top of the ninth with a pair of runs to regain the lead at 7-6 on Cordova's two-out single to left field to score Barnes and Kohlwey.  Both runs were unearned after a Buena Vista error.

The Beavers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to win the game without the benefit of a hit as the Eagles had three errors in the inning.   Two errors, a wild pitch and walk loaded the bases for Buena Vista with one out.  Schlecht drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 6-6 and Ryan Titman scored the winning run on UW-L's third error of the inning.

Gunnar Neale (0-1) took the loss for UW-L, facing four batters in the bottom of the ninth allowing one run and two walks.  Adler started for the Eagles, going 7.1 innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs and three walks while striking out four.

Kohlwey finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for UW-L while Cordova and Adler both went 2-for-5 with two RBI.  Barnes scored twice.

In the nightcap versus St. Scholastica (1-1), the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on Parker Olson's single to score Jesse Heaton.  St. Scholastica, receiving votes on the D3baseball Top-25 Poll, added three runs in the fifth on a Heaton sacrifice fly, a Tyler Deux RBI single and a UW-L throwing error.

UW-L was held to six hits in the game and left the bases-loaded in the third.

Joe Miller (0-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out four.

Kohlwey and Cefalu each had two hits.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, March 1 with two more games in Tulsa.  The Eagles face ninth-ranked the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 1 p.m. and St. Scholastica (Minn.) at 4 p.m.
