Wrestling Team Places Second at WIAC Championship

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team placed second at the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles, seeded second in the dual tournament, received a first round bye Saturday.  UW-L defeated third-seeded UW-Oshkosh (37-8) in the second round before dropping the title match (35-9) to top-seeded UW-Whitewater. 

UW-Whitewater, second in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings, earned its third straight conference title with the victory over UW-L.   The Eagles are 13th on the NWCA rankings.

UW-Stevens Point defeated UW-Oshkosh (20-18) in the third-place match while UW-Platteville earned fifth-place after a victory over UW-Eau Claire (31-18). 

Qualification for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship will be based on regional competition held March 1.  UW-L, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater will participate in a regional hosted by Wabash College (Ind.), while UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville will compete in a regional entertained by Augsburg College (Minn.). 

The national championship will be held March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-L's Ryan Weinmann was selected to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team, chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.
