Box Score Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 54-52 at UW-Stout Saturday afternoon in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles drop to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils improve to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The Eagles got out to an early lead in the first half, leading 11-7 with 10:25 remaining after a free throw by
Cameron Chapin. UW-Stout went on a 10-0 run before Chapin's jumper with 6:20 left cut the lead to 17-13. The Blue Devils built the lead to as many as 12 in the first half and led 32-22 at halftime after the Eagles'
MaKenzie Miller's layup with :31 remaining.
UW-L trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half and 42-32 with 10:34 remaining before going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 44-44 after
Maggi Bishop's jumper with 5:26 left. The game went back and forth in the final minutes with the Eagles leading 50-47 after a three-point field goal by
Sierra Watrud with 2:24 to play.
Anna Brown's jumper cut the lead to 50-49 with 2:07 remaining and Katelynne Folkers gave UW-Stout a 51-50 lead with a layup with 1:40 left.
Jenna Anderson came right back for UW-L with a jumper with 1:10 left to make it 52-51 before Brown hit one-of-two at the free throw line to force a 52-52 tie with :53 remaining. The Eagles turned the ball over on their next possession and Kyleigh Hebert's layup with :17 left gave the Blue Devils a 54-52 lead. Anderson missed a baseline runner with :02 remaining. UW-L quickly fouled and UW-Stout missed both free throws, but sealed the victory after stealing the in-bound pass in the final seconds of the game.
UW-L shot 36.0% from the field, including 20.0% (two-of-10) from three-point range, and 51.9% (14-of-27) at the free throw line.
Miller led the Eagles with 13 points and was one of three players (Bishop,
Elise DeNoyer) with seven rebounds. Bishop added 11 points for UW-L.
UW-Stout shot 27.9% from the field, including 15.0% (three-of-20) from three-point range, and 48.1% (13-of-27) at the line.
Jenna Goldsmith led the Blue Devils with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Folkers added eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, December 10 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
