Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 64-49 to 17th-ranked Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 3-3 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 6-0. Saint Mary's (Minn.) earned its third straight win over UW-L.
UW-L scored the first four points of the game and led 7-4 after a free throw by
Maggi Bishop at the 15:50 mark. Saint Mary's (Minn.) then went on a 9-0 run capped by a lay-up by Octavia Brown with 12:43 left in the half. The Cardinals led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but the Eagles cut the lead to eight with a jumper by Bishop in the final seconds to cut the lead to 27-19 at the break.
In the second half, the teams traded baskets early until UW-L cut the lead to 32-28 with a layup by
MaKenzie Miller with 12:03 remaining in the game. Saint Mary's (Minn.) went on an 11-1 run, hitting three-point shots on three consecutive possessions to extend the margin to 14 points with 10:04 remaining in the game. The Eagles got as close as 49-44 after a Miller jumper with 5:50 remaining, but the Cardinals were able to hit seven-of-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
UW-L shot 28.8% from the field, including 6.7% (one-of-15) from three-point range, and 58.3% (14-of-24) from the free-throw line.
Miller tied her career-high 15 points to lead the Eagles. Bishop finished with 14 points and game-high nine rebounds.
Elise DeNoyer added 10 points while and
Rachel Atchison finished with a game-high seven steals.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) shot 44.2% from the field, including 25.0% (four-of-16) from three-point range, and 63.6% (14-of-22) at the line.
Emma Schaefer and Natalie Larson led the Cardinals with 14 points and six rebounds each. Molly O'Toole added 11 points and Bridget Pethke had six assists.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, November 30 hosting Carroll University (Wis.) at 3 p.m.
