Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 85-82 to UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 8-8 overall and 2-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers improve to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference. UW-Platteville snaps a 12-game losing streak to UW-L with the victory.
UW-Platteville scored the first seven points of the game and led 12-2 with 16:36 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers made five of their first six shots from the field while the Eagles missed their first five shots of the game. UW-L used a 13-2 run to take its first lead of the contest at 15-14 with 13:31 left. The Eagles made all five of their field goal attempts in the run, including three-pointers from
Erin Levenhagen,
Marina Kneeland and
Rachel Atchison.
The Pioneers then went on a 16-2 run to lead 30-17 with 8:48 remaining. The Eagles later cut the deficit to 34-28 with 5:20 left, but UW-Platteville scored nine of the next 13 points to lead 43-32 with 2:48 left. The Pioneers led 48-41 at halftime.
UW-Platteville led 60-49 with 13:08 left in the game when UW-L went on a 19-4 run to lead 68-64 with 6:43 remaining. The four point lead was the largest for the Eagles in the game.
The game was later tied 77-77 with 1:53 remaining after Atchison scored on a layup for the Eagles, but the Pioneers' Stacy Clark made it 79-77 with a layup with 1:39 left. After a UW-L turnover, Mykaela Brandt hit a pair of free throws with 1:18 remaining for a 81-77 lead. The Eagles cut the lead to 81-79 on two free throws from
Mallory Cramer with :35 left. Rachel Cropp made two free throws for UW-Platteville with :33 remaining for a 83-79 lead.
Atchison cut the lead to 83-82 on a three-pointer with :14 left, but Cropp made two free throws with :10 remaining to make it a three-point lead. Atchison's three-point shot at the buzzer fell short.
UW-L shot 43.8% from the field, including 46.2% (12-of-26) from three-point range. The Eagles' 12 three-point field goals made is a season-high. The team shot 66.7% (14-of-21) from the free throw line.
Atchison led the Eagles with a career-high 20 points. She was six-of-14 from three-point range.
Katie Ehlen had 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Kneeland had a career-high 14 points while Levenhagen finished with 13 points.
Cramer had eight points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five blocks.
UW-Platteville shot 52.6% from the field, including 44.4% (eight-of-18) from three-point range, and 68.0% (17-of-25) at the line.
Clark led the Pioneers with 21 points and seven rebounds. while Alyssa Krajco had 17 points. Cropp totaled 13 points and six assists while Melissa Carmody finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, January 22 at 17th-ranked UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
