UW-L Defeats Nationally Ranked Wartburg; Drops Second Match

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Augsburg College Invitational Friday night in Si Melby Hall.  The Eagles opened with a 3-2 (25-16, 25-18, 16-25, 16-25, 15-10) victory over 15th-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) before falling 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 21-25) to Northwestern University-St. Paul (Minn.).  UW-L is now 4-2 on the season.

Wartburg (2-3) entered Friday's match ranked 15th on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Poll.  UW-L led 15-14 in set one when it scored three straight points to lead 18-14. Wartburg could get no closer than three points the rest of the set.

The Eagles and Knights were tied 13-13 in set two when UW-L scored six straight points to take the lead for good. After Wartburg took the next two sets to tie the match, UW-L took an early 7-3 lead in the fifth and deciding set. The Knights came back to force an 8-8 tie, but the Eagles' Lauren Probst had two kills in a 4-0 run and UW-L went on to earn the 15-10 victory.

Probst led UW-L with 20 kills while Crystal Ziegler finished wtih 13 and Jill Entinger 10. The Eagles hit .221 for the match with Cassie Raduka recording 52 assists.

Courtney Geisler led the Eagles' defense with 14 digs while Raduka and Probst finished with nine.

Northwestern-St. Paul trailed 13-11 in the first set in its victory over UW-L before going on a 6-1 run to lead 17-14.  Northwestern-St. Paul (1-5) never trailed in the second or third set.

Probst and Entinger tied for the team lead with seven kills while Kayla Ashland had six. The Eagles hit .079 for the match with Raduka finishing with 25 assists.

Geisler had 11 digs while Raduka recorded eight.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, September 7 at the Augsburg Invitational. The Eagles face the host Auggies at noon and top-ranked the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 4 p.m.
