UW-L Wins WIAC Championship; Royer and Stilin Capture Titles

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field squad won its 23rd consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor title Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  It is the Eagles' league-leading 49th outdoor championship in school history.  UW-L finished with 223 points to win this year's title while UW-Oshkosh was second with 206. UW-Platteville and UW-Eau Claire tied for third with 110 points. 

UW-Whitewater placed fifth (90 points) followed by UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point tied for sixth (42), UW-River Falls (31), and UW-Superior (4).

Head coach Josh Buchholtz, in his fifth year at UW-L, has won five straight WIAC outdoor titles as well as five consecutive indoor crowns.

The Eagles had a pair of individual champions Saturday, including Sean Royer in the 800-meter run (1:52.05) and David Stilin in the 5,000-meter run (15:14.47). Royer became the first runner to win the 800-meter run for UW-L since Andrew Boldt in 2007. Stilin is the first runner to capture the 5,000-meter run for the Eagles since Paul Zdroik in 2009.

Stilin was also second (3:53.38) in the 1,500-meter run Saturday while teammates Tyler Heinz placed third (3:55.50), Jacob Peterson fifth (3:55.97) and Jerry Kerska sixth (3:56.99).

Other top finishes on the track for the Eagles included Alex Koenen third (10.76), David Sikorski fourth (10.81) and Troy Brooks fifth (10.86) in the 100-meter dash while Sikorski was also fifth (22.02) in the 200-meter dash. Paul Yerhot placed ninth (22.21) in the 200-meter dash.

Aric Hoeschen was fifth (49.06) and Yerhot seventh (49.12) in the 400-meter dash.

Along with Royer taking the 800-meter run, UW-L's Eric Smits finished second (1:53.09) and Jamie Bottcher sixth (1:54.88).

UW-L took the top-three spots and four of the top-six in the 5,000-meter run. Along with Stilin finishing first, Andrew Rohlman was second (15:16.17), Phill Hernandez third (15:16.52) and Tom Linner fifth (15:17.59).

Travis Gallick was second (53.62) in the 400-meter hurdles while Joe DeRosier placed third (14.74), Adam Nichols fourth (14.79) and Dan Otto eighth (15.25) in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Eagles had a pair of relays record top-three finishes. The 4x100-meter relay of Sikorski, Koenen, Max Jessesski and Brooks placed second (41.32) while the 4x400-meter relay of Tyson Young, Nick Tehan, Cyrus Mason and Christian Wendland were third (3:16.38).

In the field events Saturday, Grant Havard was second (172-4) and John Cooper sixth (156-8) in the discus throw while Alex Zart placed ninth (50-6 1/4) in the shot put.

Isaac Vazquez finished second (50-2 3/4), Brett Davis sixth (46-2 1/2), and Julian Greenup eighth (45-3) in the triple jump while Dominique Neloms was third (6-6 3/4) in the high jump.

Vazquez was also selected to the 2012-13 Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team.

UW-L returns to action Friday, May 10 hosting the Eagle Open at 4 p.m.
