Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader to UW-Superior Wednesday at North Campus Field. The Yellowjackets won the opener, 9-5, and the nightcap, 6-2. UW-L falls to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in the WIAC while UW-Superior improves to 12-13 overall and 5-5 in the conference. UW-L is receiving votes on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll.
In the opener, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after
Cole Cefalu walked with two outs and scored on
Adam Cordova's RBI double.
UW-Superior took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a Tyler Duex sacrifice fly and Casey Dittel's RBI single. The Eagles came right back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs to lead 3-2.
Taylor Kohlwey tied the game with an RBI groundout and
Josh Rowles gave UW-L a 3-2 lead with a single to score
Nic Barnes.
The Yellowjackets tied the game in the top of the third on Dittel's bases-loaded walk. The Eagles took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third on Barnes' two-run triple to knock in
Jake Paulson and
Jordan DeBoer.
The game was delayed for three hours and 18 minutes after four innings due to rain.
UW-Superior tied the contest at 5-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Wyatt Soderquist made it 5-4 with a sacrifice fly and T.J. Evanson tied the game with an RBI single. The Yellowjackets scored four runs in the seventh to take a 9-5 lead. Tony Remund walked with one out and scored on Brady Flaherty's RBI double to give UW-Superior a 6-5 lead. Flaherty later scored after a UW-L error for a 7-5 advantage. Evanson singled with the bases-loaded to score Duex and Dittel also scored on the play after a fielding error.
Gunnar Neale (0-1) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, four runs (three earned) and four walks while striking out two.
Joel Effertz started for the Eagles, going 2.1 innings, allowing two hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks with two strikeouts.
Skyler Debilzen went 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs (both unearned) with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Eagles set a season-high with 10 walks and tied a then season-high with five errors.
Barnes finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI while DeBoer scored twice.
Riley Grandson (1-0) eanred the win for UW-Superior, pitching 5.0 innings in relief. He allowed two hits and one walk with one strikeout.
Dittel was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and two walks. Evanson finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.

UW-Superior took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Robbie Veith tied the game with a two-run single and Soderquist had a sacrifice bunt to knock in the lead run. The Yellowjackets added three runs in the seventh as Evanson hit a two-run home run and Flaherty had a sacrifice fly.
Mark Kowalke (0-3) suffered the loss for the Eagles, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out two.
UW-L had a season-high six errors in the nightcap.
Novinski finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Cordova was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Dan Genrich (4-4) earned the win for the Yellowjackets. He went 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and three walks with four strikeouts.
Flaherty was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI while Veith and Evanson each had two RBI.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 20 at UW-Platteville in a doubleheader starting at noon.
