Football Team Falls at Nationally-Ranked UW-Platteville

Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 20-10 loss at 14th-ranked UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.  The Eagles drop to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.  UW-Platteville is ranked 14th on the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top-25 Poll.  The Pioneers are also 11th on the D3football.com Top-25 Poll.

UW-L took the opening kickoff and led 3-0 after Matt Van Druten's 38-yard field goal with 10:50 left in the first quarter.  The Eagles went 54 yards in 11 plays and 4:10.  UW-L had four first downs on the drive.

UW-Platteville tied the game on its first possession of the game as Zach Litchfield connected on a 38-yard field goal with 2:09 remaining in the opening quarter.  The Pioneers went 55 yards on 16 plays and 8:41.  UW-Platteville also had four first downs on its first drive.

The Eagles drove to the Pioneers' 29-yard line on the next drive of the game, but Van Druten's 46-yard field goal attempt was short with 14:17 remaining in the second quarter.  UW-Platteville also missed a field goal on its next drive as Litchfield was wide left on a 40-yard attempt with 8:39 left in the first half.

UW-L was forced to punt on its next possession with UW-Plattevile taking over at its own 17-yard line. The Pioneers went 75 yards in 12 plays and 3:36 as Litchfield hit a 25-yard field goal with :24 left in the half to give UW-Platteville a 6-3 lead.  The score remained 6-3 at halftime.

UW-Platteville received the second half kickoff and drove down to the UW-L three-yard line on Andy Puccini's 24-yard run, but the Eagles' Jordan Pendergast forced a fumble with Jon Becker recovering on UW-L's two-yard line.  The Pioneers rushed for a first down on the play prior to Puccini's fumble on a fake punt attempt at the Eagles' 35-yard line.

After UW-L was forced to punt, UW-Platteville took a 13-3 lead as Puccini scored on a four-yard run with :59 remaining in the third quarter.  The Pioneers went 84 yards in 13 plays and 6:13. UW-Platteville converted a fourth-and-four at UW-L's 29-yard line on a John Kelly 14-yard pass to Paul Reit.

The Pioneers made it 20-3 with 9:56 left in the game as Kelly threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Ryley Bailey.  UW-Platteville went 74 yards in 10 plays and 4:50.

After the teams traded punts, the Eagles cut the lead to 20-10 with 1:16 remaining as Andy Sires threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Joe Kracht.  UW-L went 43 yards in 14 plays and 3:03.  The Eagles converted a fourth-and-16 from their own 49-yard line as Sires had a 17-yard completion to Chris Stackhouse.  The Pioneers were also called for a pass interference on fourth-and-goal from their own two-yard line after an Eagles' incompletion.

UW-L finished with 216 yards, including 63 rushing and 153 passing.  Ben Hertrampf had 81 yards rushing on 12 attempts (6.8 average).  Trent Cummings was 12-of-19 passing for 104 yards while Sires finished five-of-10 for 49 yards and a touchdown.  Stackhouse (49 yards) and Mark Dorlack (26 yards) each had four catches while Chase Montgomery (22 yards) had three receptions.

The Eagles were two-of-11 on third-down and two-of-two on fourth-down.  UW-L finished with 17 first downs.

UW-Platteville totaled 487 yards, including 237 rushing and 250 passing. Puccini finished with 221 yards rushing on 31 attempts (7.1 average) while Kelly was 26-of-34 for 250 yards with one touchdown.  Reit caught eight passes for 90 yards while Bailey (66 yards, touchdown) and Trevor Whitehead (64 yards) each had seven receptions.

The Pioneers earned their fifth straight win over the Eagles and fourth consecutive in Platteville. The team finished six-of-12 on third-down and converted both of its fourth-down attempts.  UW-Platteville finished with 25 first downs and won the time of possession, 36:53 to 23:07. 

Shane Rockweiler led UW-L with 14 tackles (five unassisted) while Brett Benson finished with 10 tackles (eight unassisted).

Devon Vance led UW-Platteville with nine tackles.  The Pioneers recorded 5.0 quarterback sacks, including 2.0 by Andrew Robinson.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 16 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 11:30 a.m. in the regular-season finale for both teams.  It will be Senior Day/Veterans' Day at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
