Box Score Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned a 77-61 victory at Luther College (Iowa) Wednesday night in the Regents Center. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season while the Norse drop to 2-1. It is UW-L's fifth win in the last six meetings with Luther.
The game was tied 8-8 with 15:11 left in the first half when Luther scored the next five points to lead 13-8 with 13:30 remaining. UW-L then used a 11-2 run to take a 19-15 lead with 10:40 left in the opening half. The Eagles led by as many as five points in the first half at 24-19 with 9:53 left, but the Norse went on a 5-0 run to force a 24-24 tie.
UW-L led by as many as four points and Luther by as many as three later in the half before the game was tied 37-37 at halftime.
Luther took a 42-41 lead with 16:33 remaining in the game after Taylor Johnson hit one-of-two free throws, but UW-L used a 8-3 run to lead 49-44 with 14:38 left after a
Rachel Atchison three-pointer. The Norse took their final lead of the game at 51-50 with 10:44 remaining on a Johnson jumper. Atchison then hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 56-51 advantage with 8:32 left, but Luther's Nellie Nelson made a jumper and Taylor Jenks a three-pointer to force a 56-56 tie.
Atchison made her fourth consecutive three-pointer for the Eagles with 7:03 left to give UW-L a 59-56 lead. Luther would get no closer the rest of the game. After a pair of missed jumpers by the Norse,
Kelsey Robers gave UW-L a 61-56 advantage with a jumper with 6:22 remaining.
Luther cut the deficit to 63-57, but UW-L responded with a 10-0 run to lead 73-57 with 3:08 remaining.
UW-L shot 46.7% from the field, including 40.0% (10-of-25) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 61.1% (11-of-18) at the free throw line.
Atchison led five players in double figures for UW-L with 19 points, finishing seven-of-11 from the field, including five-of-seven from three-point range. She also had a game-high four steals.
Mallory Cramer and
Katie Ehlen each finished with 12 points while
Jenny Gallagher had 11 and Robers 10. Cramer recorded a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds and two blocks.
Luther shot 37.7% from the field, including 50.0% (six-of-12) from three-point range. The Norse shot 50.0% (15-of-30) at the line.
Nelson led Luther with 14 points and seven rebounds while Jenks and Kylie Romeo each finished with 10 points.
UW-L returns to action Friday, November 22 at 5 p.m. versus Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) at the UW-Platteville Classic.
