#8 Coe College (Iowa) 19, #21 UW-La Crosse 18
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team dropped its 2013-14 season opener with a 19-18 loss to eighth-ranked Coe College (Iowa) Friday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles entered the dual ranked 21st in the nation.
The Kohawks (1-0) took a 6-0 lead after a pair of wins by decision to start the dual. Jan Rosenberg won by decision (11-7) over
Ryan Weinmann at 125-pounds while Jimmy Gotto won by decision (11-4) over
Dustin Weinmann at 133. Gotto is ranked third in the NCAA Division III after a second-place national finish a year ago.
The Eagles (0-1) cut the lead to 6-3 as
Austin Schoen won by decision (2-1) over Beau Westpfahl at 141-pounds. UW-L took its first lead of the night at 149-pounds as
Dylan Shaffer won by fall (6:08) over Coe's Tim Noverini to make it 9-6.
Coe tied the dual at 157-pounds with fifth-ranked Dimitri Boyer winning by decision (8-2) over UW-L's
Keegan Einerson. The Kohawks' Farai Sewera made it 12-9 with a win by decision (10-4) over the Eagles'
Sean Huls at 165-pounds. Ethan Ball, ranked eighth in the country at 174-pounds, gave Coe a 16-9 advantage with a major decision win (10-2) over
Richard Carlson.
UW-L cut the deficit to 16-12 with
Eric Twohey winning by decision (7-1) over Ryan Sheldon at 184-pounds. Coe took a 19-12 lead at 197-pounds with ninth-ranked Donnie Horner winning by decision (8-7) over
Mike Minske.
Jake Minske made the final margin 19-18 for UW-L as he won by fall (:48) over Coe's Corey Becker at 285-pounds.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 16 at the Luther College (Iowa) Open starting at 9 a.m.
