Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team fell 16-15 at Coe College (Iowa) Friday night in Eby Fieldhouse. The teams were tied 15-15 at the conclusion of the 10 matches, but the Kohawks were awarded a team point based on criteria number three for finishing with the most match points (40-37). UW-L entered the dual sixth in the Brute National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III rankings while Coe was third.
The Kohawks took a 6-0 lead after the first two matches Friday night. Jimmy Gotto, fourth in the preseason rankings at 125-pounds, earned a 3-1 victory over the Eagles'
James Bennett and Drew Hinschberger earned a 6-0 win over UW-L's
Connor Carstens at 133.
UW-L won the next three matches to take a 9-6 lead.
Adam Sheley, second at 141-pounds, cut the lead to 6-3 with a 8-2 win over Chris LeClere.
Keegan Einerson tied the dual with a 8-6 victory at 149 over Tim Noverini and
JR Lewis defeated Dimitri Boyer 4-1 at 157-pounds to give the Eagles a 9-6 lead.
McThomas Sewera of Coe defeated fourth-ranked
Kevin O'Brien of UW-L 4-1 at 165-pounds to force a 9-9 tie. The Kohawks then took a 12-9 lead as Ethan Ball defeated
Grant Miller 3-1 at 174. Ball is ranked fourth in the country at 184-pounds.
The Eagles'
Eric Twohey tied the dual at 12-12 at 184-pounds with a 6-2 victory over the Kohawks' Ryan Sheldon, but Coe led 15-12 after Donnie Horner defeated UW-L's
Kevin Hein 8-4 at 197.
The 285-pound match featured a pair of top-four ranked wrestlers. UW-L's
Billy Mayer, fourth in the preseason rankings, pulled the Eagles' even in the dual with a 4-3 win over Coe's Alex Burkle, ranked second in the nation.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 10 at the UW-Stevens Point Open and Luther College (Iowa) Open.
