La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with UW-Superior Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field in the Eagles' home finale. UW-Superior took the opener, 8-3, while UW-L came back to win the second game, 1-0. UW-L is now 19-12 overall and 11-9 in the WIAC while UW-Superior is 9-22 overall and 4-12 in the conference.
The teams split their four-game series this season.
In Wednesday's opener, UW-L raced out to a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Cole Cefalu scored on
Zach Harazin's double play grounder in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
Brett Jacobson had an RBI groundout and
Travis Martin scored on a Yellowjackets' error in the second inning for the 3-0 lead.
UW-Superior cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third as Shaun Marshall hit an RBI single and Mitch Loegering walked with the bases loaded. The Yellowjackets tied the game with a run in the fourth as Robbie Veith hit a run-scoring double to knock in Justin Haag. UW-Superior took its first lead of the game with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Tom Fairbanks scored on a throwing error and Haag scored on Tony Remund's ground-out.
Rhett Williamson hit an RBI triple in the eighth for UW-Superior and 6-3 lead and the Yellowjackets added two more runs in the ninth to finish the scoring. Haag hit an RBI single and Remund a sacrifice fly.
Dan Lindsey earned the win for UW-Superior, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (one earned) and five walks while striking out two. Peter Devine picked up the save, going 2.1 innings, allowing two hits.
Mike Labelle, Fairbanks, Haag and Veith each had two hits for UW-Superior. Haag scored three runs.
Garrett Scray (3-3) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out three.
Tim Verthein started for the Eagles, going 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs and four walks with four strikeouts.
Adam Cordova and
Jay Fanta each had two hits for UW-L.
In the nightcap,
Bryant Rude and
Zach Lauersdorf combined on a six-hit shutout. Rude (4-3) earned the win, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing six hits while tying his career-high with 13 strikeouts. He did not walk a batter. Lauersdorf picked up his sixth save of the season, pitching 1.0 inning with one strikeout.
UW-L scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Jacobson opened the inning with a single and moved to second on
Connor Krohn's sacrifice bunt. After a pop out, Cefalu hit a two-out RBI single to score Jacobson.
Cefalu went 2-for-4 for UW-L.
Nick Bursik took the loss for UW-Superior, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run and two walks while striking out one. Marshall and Williamson each finished 2-for-4.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, May 1 at Bethel University (Minn.) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
