Baseball Team Splits with Saint John's

Corey Geary finished 5-for-8 in Tuesday's doubleheader.
Chandler, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a doubleheader with Saint John's University (Minn.) Tuesday afternoon at Snedigar Field #4. The Eagles, now 3-2 on the season, won the opener, 13-3, before the Johnnies came back to win the nightcap, 4-3. Saint John's is 3-1 on the year. 

Bryant Rude (1-0) earned the win for UW-L in game one, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing three hits, three runs (two unearned) and three walks while striking out 13. The 13 strikeouts is tied for 10th in single-game school history. 

The Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the second and four in the bottom of the third to lead 9-0. Cole Cefalu gave UW-L a 1-0 lead on an RBI single. Brooks Braga added a two-run double while Corey Geary had an RBI triple and Jay Fanta a run-scoring single in the second. 

Cefalu hit an RBI single in the third while Geary had a two-run triple and Fanta his second RBI single of the game. 

UW-L added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Cefalu and Geary hit run-scoring singles. 

Saint John's scored three runs in the top of the seventh.

Cefalu finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI while Geary was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Matt Trocke and Braga each had two hits while Brett Jacobson scored three times.

In the nightcap, Saint John's scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to lead 2-0, but UW-L tallied three times in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Zach Harazin tied the game with a two-run triple and later scored on a Johnnies' error. 

Saint John's took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Brett Kramer RBI double and Luke Sweeter sacrifice fly. 

The Eagles had two runners on in the top of the seventh, but failed to score.

Geary was 2-for-4 for UW-L while Harazin had two RBI. 

Mitch Running (0-1) suffered the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks with five strikeouts.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, March 16 versus Concordia University (Wis.) starting at 4:30 p.m. (Central Time) in Phoenix, Ariz.
