Wrestling Team Earns Shutout over UW-Eau Claire

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked second in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Poll, earned a 45-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire Thursday night in Mitchell Hall. It is UW-L's 25th straight dual win over UW-Eau Claire. The Eagles improve to 11-3-1 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds fall to 3-13 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

UW-L took a 6-0 lead at 125-pounds as Albie McKinney earned the win by forfeit. McKinney is ranked third in NCAA Division III. The Eagles' Jonny Brennan and Alex Dahl followed with wins by fall to make it 18-0. Brennan won by fall (1:52) over Neil Manns at 133-pounds while Dahl won by fall (1:57) over the Blugolds' Steven Fisher at 141.

Sixth-ranked Matt Mauseth won by technical fall (18-3, 4:42) over Josh Baier at 149-pounds and 23-0 advantage. It is Mauseth's 99th career victory.

Ryan Farwell won by major decision (14-1) against Levi Polus at 157-pounds and 27-0 Eagles' lead.

UW-L's Cory Ferguson won by decision (9-4) over Ricky Gonzales at 165-pounds while Mike Schmitz followed with a win by technical fall (16-1, 4:57) over Will Christ at 174. Ferguson is ranked ninth in the country while Schmitz is second. Schmitz is now 19-5 on the season.

Vinnie Pedretti and Tony Piechowski picked up back-to-back wins by decision for the Eagles at 184 and 197-pounds. Pedretti defeated Matt Rieckhoff by decision (7-5) at 184 while Piechowski beat Luke Ortscheid by decision (3-0) at 197.

Ninth-ranked Billy Mayer finished the dual with a win by major decision (14-5) for UW-L over Joe Pitsch at 285-pounds.

UW-L returns to action Friday, February 11 hosting Lakeland College (Wis.) at 6:30 p.m.
