Second-Ranked Eagles Defeat Eighth-Ranked Pointers

In a battle of top-10 ranked wrestling squads, second-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse earned a 27-9 victory over eighth-ranked UW-Stevens Point Friday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the WIAC while the Pointers drop to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference. UW-L is ranked second and UW-Stevens Point eighth in the Brute Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll.

The Eagles took eight of the 10 matches Friday night, including the first seven. Adam Sheley, ranked sixth in NCAA Division III at 133-pounds, opened the dual with a win by decision (6-1) over the Pointers' Jordan Kust. Sheley improves to 16-2 on the season. Top-ranked Bebeto Yewah gave UW-L a 8-0 lead as he won by technical fall (20-5, 4:01) over Shane Sweeney at 141-pounds. Yewah is now 15-1 on the year.

Matt Mauseth, ranked fifth at 149, defeated Kris Magruder by decision (6-3) to make it 11-0. The Eagles' Brady Schrupp earned a win by decision (9-6) over UW-Stevens Point's Ben Strobel at 157-pounds and 14-0 score.

In a battle of ranked wrestlers at 165-pounds, UW-L's sixth-ranked Cory Ferguson won by decision (8-5) over seventh-ranked Jordan Schulte. The Eagles' Mike Schmitz, number in NCAA Division at 174-pounds, gave UW-L a 21-0 lead after a win by major decision (12-1) over Ryan Conat.

Vinnie Pedretti followed with a win by decision (6-2) over Coulter Nyenhuis at 184-pounds and 2-0 lead.

UW-Stevens Point earned its first win of the night as Chad Gregory won by fall (6:00) over John Poppie at 197-pounds. UW-L's Billy Mayer came back to win by decision (8-3) over 10th-ranked Steve Wozniak at 285-pounds and 27-6 Eagles' advantage. The Pointers' Brad Kuehn won by decision (10-7) over Matt Cole at 125-pounds.

UW-L returns to action Friday, January 28 at the Pete Willson Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational starting at 2 p.m.
