Oshkosh, Wis. - The second-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the WIAC with a 29-9 victory at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans drop to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference. UW-L is second in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Rankings.
The Eagles won seven of the 10 matches Wednesday night. The Titans took a 3-0 lead at 125-pounds as David Rosenau won by decision (3-1) over
Matt Cole.
UW-L took a 7-3 lead with a pair of wins as
Adam Sheely won by decision (3-1) over Zachary Mueller at 133-pounds and
Bebeto Yewah earned a win by major decision (22-8) over Kyle Kleuskens at 141.
UW-Oshkosh's Nazar Kulchytskyy cut the lead to 7-6 after a win by decision (9-4) over UW-L's
Matt Mauseth at 149-pounds.
The Eagles took five of the final six matches to earn the victory.
JR Lewis won by decision (5-2) over Jose Quintana at 157-pounds;
Cory Ferguson won by major decision (10-1) over Aaron Konitzer at 165 and
Mike Schmitz won by fall (2:34) over Aaron Geiger at 174-pounds to give UW-L a 20-6 lead.
Sam Engelland won by decision (7-2) over
Mitch Artist at 184-pounds for UW-Oshkosh before
John Poppie and
Billy Mayer captured the last two matches. Poppie won by decision (6-5) over Aaron Erickson at 197-pounds while Mayer won by fall (:52) over Ryan Heath at 285.
UW-L returns to action Friday, January 21 hosting eighth-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
