Matman Invitational Results

Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team placed seventh at the Cornell College Matman Invitational Saturday in the Small Multi-Sport Center Arena. The Eagles finished with 48.5 team points while Wartburg College (Iowa ) took the team title with 168.5. A total of 10 teams competed.

Augsburg College, Minn. placed second (91.0 points) followed by the University of Dubuque, Iowa (81.5), Loras College, Iowa (69.0), Coe College, Iowa (66.0), Cornell College, Iowa (56.5), UW-L (48.5), Luther College, Iowa (40.0), Buena Vista University, Iowa (27.0) and UW-Platteville (25.0).

UW-L had five wrestlers place Saturday. Bobby Dorn was second at 149-pounds while Johnny Brennan was fifth at 133.  Alex Dahl (149), Ryan Farwell (157) and Tony Piechowski (184) each placed sixth. 

Dorn defeated Ryan Roberts of Cornell by decision (4-0), Chris Tims of Wartburg by decision (8-4) and Cameron Wagner of Wartburg by decision (4-0) to reach the championship match. He then fell by decision (9-7) to Cole Welter of Wartburg. 

At 133-pounds, Brennan defeated Micky Spiwak of Cornell by major decision (14-4) in his opening match and then beat Boyd Suparat of Augsburg by decision (15-8) in the quarterfinals. He lost by decision (8-4) to Tommy Mirocha of Wartburg in the semifinals. Brennan lost by decision (5-4) to Mike Orange of Augsburg before earning a win by medical forfeit over Michael Buhr of Cornell in the fifth-place match. 

Dahl was sixth at 149-pounds. He defeated Kris Powers of Dubuque (14-7) and Joe Wood of Loras (6-5) to advance to the semifinals. Dahl lost to Welter of Wartburg in the semifinals (12-0). He then lost to Charles Tims of Wartburg (12-4) and Wood of Loras (10-3). 

Farwell finished 4-2 at 157-pounds to earn sixth-place. He defeated Tylar Parker of Buena Vista by fall (6:03) before losing to Tims of Wartburg (5-0). Farwell defeated Tony Castro of Augsburg by fall (5:55) and then defeated a pair of teammates, beating JR Lewis (2-0) and Brady Schrupp (5-0). Farwell defaulted in his last two matches. 

Piechowski defeated Joe Klinkel of Buena Vista (10-5) and Andrew Roberts of Cornell (9-2) to move into the semifinals where he lost to Sam Upah of Wartburg (10-2). He lost to Espen Fredericksen of Coe (11-6) and Roberts of Cornell (3-1) in the fifth-place match.

Other finishers for UW-L included Matt Cole going 0-2 at 125-pounds; Scott Hogan 0-2 at 149: RJ Dilcher 2-2 at 157; Schrupp 3-2 at 157; Lewis 2-2 at 157; Clay Olson 1-2 at 174; Scott Gifford 1-2 at 174; Vinnie Pedretti 1-2 at 184 and Evan Sinram 2-2 at 197.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 19 at UW-Oshkosh starting at 7 p.m.
