Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball split a four-game WIAC series at UW-Superior Saturday-Sunday at Ted Whearett Field. The Eagles took both games Saturday, winning 12-10 and 6-5. The Yellowjackets swept the twinbill Sunday, winning 2-1 and 11-8. UW-L is now 13-16 overall and 5-9 in the WIAC while UW-Superior is 14-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference.
In Saturday's doubleheader,
Steve Henes earned the win in the first game. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four hits while striking out two.
Brandon Walczak started for UW-L, going 4.2 innings, allowing nine hits, 10 runs and five walks with two strikeouts.
UW-L trailed 10-8 after six innings, but tallied three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. The Eagles scored a run on a wild pitch in the seventh followed by an RBI single from
Zach Harazin and RBI double from
Brett Jacobson.
Corey Geary added an RBI single in the eighth.
Harazin finished 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBI while
Matt Johnson was 3-for-5 with two run scored. Jacobson, Geary,
Adam Cordova and
Lance Poppy each had two hits. Poppy also had two RBI.
In the second game,
Garrett Scray pitched a complete-game victory for the Eagles. He went 9.0 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and five walks with 12 strikeouts. Cordova, Geary, Harazin, Jacobson and Johnson each had two hits. Cordova had two RBI while
Mickey Boyle added two runs.
UW-Superior came back to win both games Sunday. In the opener, the Yellowjackets scored two runs in the bottom of the first before Cordova hit a solo home run for the Eagles' run in the top of the third.
Mitch Running took the loss for UW-L, pitching a complete-game. He went 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and two walks with four strikeouts. Cordova was 3-for-4 while
Matt Trocke,
Jay Fanta and Poppy had two hits each.
In the nightcap, UW-Superior scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
Tim Verthein suffered the loss, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
Zach Lauersdorf started for UW-L, going 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (three earned) and two walk with four strikeouts.
Trocke was 3-for-5 while Fanta finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and RBI. Poppy was 3-for-4.
UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 28 hosting UW-Platteville at 1 p.m.
