Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 40-3 victory at UW-Platteville Thursday night in Williams Fieldhouse. The Eagles are also 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UW-Platteville drops to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
UW-L, ranked third in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Top-30 Poll, won nine of 10 matches Thursday.
UW-Platteville took a 3-0 lead at 125-pounds as Mack Drees earned a 6-2 victory over
Matt Cole.
The Eagles came back to capture the next nine matches.
Adam Sheley tied the dual at 3-3 with a win by decision (8-4) over Allen Fish at 133-pounds and
Alex Dahl gave UW-L a 7-3 lead after a major decision victory (13-0) against Daron Fuglsang at 141.
Matt Mauseth made it 12-3 with a win by technical fall (20-5, 5:40) over the Pioneers' Bobby Bennett.
Ryan Farwell followed with a major decision (10-2) over Austin Holland at 157-pounds and 16-3 lead.
At 165-pounds, UW-L's
Cory Ferguson earned a win by fall (:40) against Jacob Borkowski and
Mike Schmitz won by major decision (15-3) over Nathan Schmitz at 174 and 26-3 Eagles' lead.
UW-L's
Mitch Artist won by decision (8-3) over Matt Scott at 184-pounds;
John Poppie won by technical fall (18-2, 5:10) over Mike Harman at 197 and
Billy Mayer earned a win by fall (2:24) against Fabain Bacerra at 285-pounds in the final dual.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, Dec. 4 hosting the Holiday Inn Express Duals. The Eagles face Cornell College (Iowa) at 9 a.m.; Loras College (Iowa) at 11 a.m. and St. Cloud State University (Minn.) at 1 p.m.
