UW-La Crosse 39, UW-Oshkosh 3
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team remained undefeated in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) duals with a 39-3 victory over UW-Oshkosh Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, ranked sixth in NCAA Division III, improve to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the WIAC while the Titans fall to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
UW-L, 29-11 all-time against UW-Oshkosh, has now won 18 straight matches over the Titans.
UW-L won the first nine matches Tuesday night. The dual began at 133-pounds as the Eagles'
Adam Sheley won by decision (9-2) over the Titans' Kyle Kleuskens.
Alex Dahl (141),
Matt Mauseth (149) and
Ryan Farwell (157) each won by major decision to give UW-L a 15-0 lead.
Dahl defeated Carl DeLuca at 141-pounds (12-3), Mauseth beat Jose Quintana at 149 (18-6) and Farwell won by major decision over Trevor Dyreson at 157 (11-2). Mauseth is currently ranked third in NCAA Division III.
Cory Ferguson, ranked eighth in the country, made it 21-0 for the Eagles as he won by fall (4:10) over James Dederich at 165-pounds. Second-ranked
Mike Schmitz won by decision (5-2) over Sam Engelland at 174-pounds for UW-L and a 24-0 lead.
The Eagles'
Mitch Artist (184) and
John Poppie (197) recorded back-to-back wins by fall for a 36-0 lead. Artist defeated Aaron Erickson (:59) while Poppie beat Ryan Heath (2:26).
UW-L's
Dan Laurent won by decision (5-2) over Jason LaPlante for a 39-0 lead. Laurent is currently ranked third in NCAA Division III.
UW-Oshkosh earned its only win at 125-pounds as Zachary Mueller won by decision (10-8) over
Albie McKinney.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, Jan. 24 hosting top-ranked Augsburg College (Minn.) at 2 p.m.
