Thesing Scores Twice in Shutout Win at Southern Maine; Eagles Notch Three Goals in First Ten Minutes

Gorham, Maine - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-0 victory at the University of Southern Maine Friday afternoon at Hannaford Field. The Huskies drop to 1-1.

In the second-ever meeting the two teams, UWL tallied three goals in the first 9:03 of the contest. Jillian Sawadski started the scoring at 4:05 followed by Aubree Caya's goal at 4:29 to make it 2-0. The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 at 9:03 on an Amaya Thesing goal on Caya's assist.

UWL maintained its 3-0 lead at halftime, recording 15 shots in the first half.

Thesing gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead at 50:42 before Gianna Zamborini's goal at 64:00 off an Audrey Wanless assist made it 5-0. Wanless finished the scoring at 73:41 on Erelyn Apel's assist.

Summer Nicolai and Jordyn Young combined on the shutout for UWL. Nicolai, who earned the victory, recorded two saves while playing the first half with Young finishing with one save in the second half.

UWL, receiving votes on the United Soccer Coaches/Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Organization for Coaches (IWSOC) Top 25 Preseason Poll, totaled 35 shots, including 26 on goal. Grace Williams led the Eagles with seven shots, including four on goal. Sawadski had five shots, all coming on goal. Caya, Thesing, Sera Speltz and Morgan Fitt each had three shots. Thesing had three on goal with Speltz and Caya each finishing with two. Apel had two shots, both on goal.

Fourteen different players recorded a shot.

The Eagles had 10 corner kicks, including nine in the second half.

Southern Maine finished with eight shots with four on goal. Mia Wetzel and Kenzie Pires led the Huskies with three shots each. Wetzel had a team-high two shots on goal.

Kaylee Vasiloff suffered the loss, totaling 12 saves in 55:52. Halle Brown had eight saves in 34:08.

The Huskies had one corner kick.

UWL had won the only other match-up with Southern Maine, earning a 2-1 victory in Gorham in 2004.

UWL returns to action Sunday, September 6 at Husson University (Maine) at 10 a.m. (Central).
