UWL Opens Season with Shutout Victory at Carroll; Eagles Earn Seventh Straight Opening Win; Murphy Becomes School's Career Leader in Victories

Waukesha, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team won its seventh consecutive season opener with a 1-0 victory at Carroll University (Wis.) Tuesday afternoon at Schneider Stadium. The Pioneers were also playing their season opener.

UWL improves to 10-2 in openers under head coach Jason Murphy.
Jason Murphy has earned 174 career
victories at UWL.


With Tuesday's victory, Murphy becomes UWL's career leader in victories, improving to 174-46-26 (.760) in his 13th season. He breaks the record of 173 wins by Sara Burton who served as head coach from 1994-2013. Murphy ranks fifth in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) history in victories. He is 215-79-28 (.711) overall in collegiate career after going 41-33-2 (.553) in four seasons as head coach at Marian University (Wis.). 

In a scoreless first half, UWL recorded 10 shots in the first 45:00 while holding Carroll (Wis.) without a shot. The Eagles had four shots on goal and one corner kick.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at 64:55 on a Sydney Nash goal. Grace Williams and Kate Heiderscheit recorded assists. The game was delayed with 15:29 remaining due to the weather. The Pioneers' lone shot in the game came at 85:48 by Naomy Gonzalez and saved by Summer Nicolai.

UWL, receiving votes on the United Soccer Coaches/Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Organization for Coaches (IWSOC) Top 25 Preseason Poll, finished with 23 shots in the game with 10 on goal. Aubree Caya led the Eagles with six shots while Amaya Thesing finished with three. Both players had two shots on goal.

Williams, Jillian Sawadski, Sera Speltz, Catherine Arnold and Macy Evans each finished with two shots. The Eagles had four corner kicks.

Nicolai earned the shutout win, registering one save. It is her 12th career shutout. 

Carroll (Wis.) totaled the one shot from Gonzalez. The Pioneers finished with one corner kick. Ava Lewandowski suffered the loss, finishing with nine saves.

UWL returns to action Friday, September 4 at the University of Southern Maine at 2 p.m. (Central).
