Baseball Splits WIAC Doubleheader With UW-Oshkosh; Deprez Ties School Record For Wins

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader on Friday.

  • Result Game 1: UW-Oshkosh 8, UW-La Crosse 3

  • Up Next: The Eagles and Titans will finish the four game series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • The Titans would strike first as they scored three runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the third inning. Logan Schill's single to left field scored two runs while Trevor Morris' sacrifice bunt scored Owen Housinger from third to make it 3-0.
  • The Eagles would get two of those runs back in their half of the third inning. Keegan Fleischman reached on a throwing error and went to third on Emiliano Ramos' single to right field. Chris Calico would then reach on a sacrifice bunt fielding error which allowed Fleischman to score. Charley Rowan's sacrifice bunt put Ramos on third and Calico on second with one out. Luke Walton then brought Ramos into score with a ground out to second to make it 3-2.
  • The Titans would score a single run in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh inning to lead 7-2. Brenden Max drove in a run in the fourth with a single while Cullen Kirchberg's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Schill. Then in the sixth, Gavin Persson homered to right field to make it 6-2. In the seventh inning, Max would again drive in a run with a single to give the Titans a 7-2 lead. 
  • In the eighth inning with two outs, Fleischman doulbed to left field and scored on Ramos' single to center field to cut the Eagles deficit to 7-3.
  • Max would make it 8-3 in the ninth inning with his third RBI single of the game. 

    Game Two
  • In game two, neither team would be able to get much offense going early as the Titans were limited to just three hits and the Eagles just two hits over the first five innings.
  • The Eagles would finally break the 0-0 tie as Luke Walton walked to lead off the sixth and advanced to third when Sam Viniard reached via a throwing error. AJ Levy would then execute a sacrifice bunt which brought Walton home to give UWL a 1-0 lead. 
  • Braydon Skenandore doubled to led off the Titans seventh inning with a double and went to third on Cullen Kirchberg's sacrifice bunt. Skenandore would then score on a balk to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Ramos walked to start the bottom of the seventh inning and went to second on Calvin Hargrove's sacrifice bunt. Calico then moved Ramos to third with an infield single to second base to put runners at the corner with one out. Rowan would then single to left field which scored Ramos before Walton walked to load the bases. Brady Burrill would then put the Eagles up 4-1 as he singled down the left field line to score both Calico and Rowan. 
  • Austin Olla (S,3) would come on in relief for the Eagles and pitch a clean eighth and ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. Olla would record three strikeouts during the two innings of relief. 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with three runs on nine hits and three walks. 
  • Ramos finished game one 2-for-4 with an RBI and a runs scored while Fleischman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Eagles offensively.
  • Walton was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Rowan finished 2-for-4 to join Ramos and Fleischman with multi-hit games. 
  • AJ Curtis (4-3) made the start on the mound and suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on sevens hits and one walk while striking out three in 5.0 innings. Nate Edelman came on in relief to pitch the final 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. 
  • Josh Jensen (3-5) earned the win as he allowed two unearned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out nine in 7.0 innings.  
  • The Titans finished with eight runs on 11 hits and three walks. 
  • Max led the Titans going 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Schill was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with four runs on six hits and five walks in game two.
  • Burrill drove in two runs as he finished 1-for-4 while Levy was 1-for-3 with an RBI. 
  • Walton (3 walks) and Ramos (1-for-2, walk, hit by pitch) each reached base three times in game two. 
  • It was a record setting day for Owen Deprez (7-1) as he tied the all-time school record with his 24th win of his career. Deprez went 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 11. Hit 11 stikeouts bring his total for his career to 254 which also is a career record for the Eagles. 
  • UW-Stevens Point finished the second game with one run on four hits and a walk.
  • Brett Gaynor (3-1) was charged with the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out six in 6.1 innings. 
  • Skenandore led the Titans in game two as he finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
