UWL Limited To One Run In Doubleheader Loss

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team was limited to just one run in a doubleheader loss to #8 ranked UW-Whitewater Monday afternoon. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  •  Neither team was able to score any runs over the first nine innings of play. 
  • UWL would threaten in both the eighth and ninth innings. AJ Levy led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and moved to second on a one out single by Brady Lash. However, the Warhawks relief pitcher Franklin Kirchner would get a ground ball double play to escape the jam. Then in the ninth, Luke Walton and Andrew Palm both singled to start the inning. UW-Whitewater relief pitcher, Benjy Tucker, then got a bunt pop up followed by two fielder choice ground outs to shortstop to get our of the inning.  
  • With two outs and a runner on first, Evan Olson was hit by a pitch and Leyton Bowers then hit a three-run home run to break the tie. Aaron Holland would follow with a home run of his own to put UW-Whitewater up 4-0. 

    Game Two
  • UWL would threaten right away in game two but was unsuccessful in getting a run. UWL would load the bases with two outs but the Warhawks would end the threat with a ground out.
  • UW-Whitewater would get on the scoreboard first in game two as Aaron Holland drew a bases loaded two out walk to put the Warhawks up 1-0. 
  • The Warhawks would add a run in the fifth inning as Brady Gilroy led off the inning by reaching on a two base fielding error. After Gilroy advanced to third on a strikeout, Holland hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 2-0 Warhawks. 
  • The Eagles would load the bases with two outs in the seventh inning but UW-Whitewater would record a ground ball out to end the inning. 
  • In the eighth, Walton singled to left and advanced to second on a single by Brady Burrill with no outs. Then with two outs, Matthew Sonnenschein singled to center to score Walton from second. Burrill and Sonnenschein moved up a base on the play. But that would be the only the run the Eagles would score as the final out was recorded by the next hitter. 
  • UWL would go down in order in the ninth inning.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 10 hits and one walk. 
  • Brady Lash (3-for-5), Luke Walton (2-for-4) and AJ Levy (2-for-3) each finished with multi-hit games. 
  • Logan Zickert (0-1) suffered the loss as he came on in relief in the 11th inning and allowed four runs on three hits in 1.0 inning. AJ Curtis made the start for the Eagles as he allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out six in 8.0 innings of work. Chayce Osterhaus did not allow a hit or a run and recorded three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.  
  • Tucker (5-1) earned the win for the Warhawks as he came on in relief to pitch the final three innings, allowing three hits and finishing with two strikeouts. 
  • UW-Whitewater finished with four runs on five hits and four walks.
  • Bowers finished 1-for-4 with a home run, walk and three RBIs while Evan Olson was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with one run on 10 hits and two walks in game two.
  • Sonnenschein (2-for-4 with a walk) drove in the lone Eagles run while Brady Burrill was 2-for-3 with a walk. 
  • Trace Vrbancic (0-1) made the start for UWL and suffered the loss as he allowed one run on one hit and four walks while striking outtwo in 4.0 innings. Aaron Schwechler pitched the final five innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight. 
  • UW-Whitewater finished with two runs on three hits and six walks.
  • Holland drove in both runs as he it a sacrifice and drew a bases loaded walk for the Warhawks.
