Eagles Split WIAC Doubleheader With UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team split a doubleheader on Monday with UW-Eau Claire as they won game one 5-1 but fell 3-2 in game two.  

THE BASICS

  • Up Next: UWL will return home on Wednesday to take on the Pioneers of UW-Platteville at Copeland Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UW-Eau Claire would strike first as they took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Logan Scuglik reached on a bases loaded fielders choice which scored Logan Hesselman from third. 
  • UWL would get that run back in the top of the third as Chris Calico walked to lead off the inning, stole second base and advanced to third on Charley Rowan's single. After Rowan stole second, a wild pitch would bring home Calico to even the score at 1-1. 
  • Austin Buck would single to lead of the Blugolds half of the third inning. Will Johnson would then give the Blugolds a 3-1 lead as he hit a home run to left field. 
  • The score remained 3-1 until Andrew Palm led off the Eagles sixth inning with his fifth home run of the year to cut the Blugolds lead to 3-2. 
  • In the seventh, Luke Walton singled and went to second on AJ Levy's sacrifice bunt. After Walton advanced to third on wild pitch, Calico singled up the middle to tie the score at 3-3. Calico advanced to second a throwing error and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Rowan's sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 in favor of the Eagles. 
  • Walton would drive in an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a single to left center field which scored Emiliano Ramos from second. Earlier in the inning, Ramos reached via a walk and stole second base. 
  • UW-Eau Claire would get a one out single in the bottom of the ninth but UWL relief pitcher Owen Deprez would retire the next two batters to seal the win for the Eagles.

    Game Two
  • UW-Eau Claire scored all three of their runs in the first inning as John Digregorio hit a sacrifice fly while Diego Caicedo drove in two runs with a bases loaded single.  
  • The Eagles would finally get on the scoreboard in the sixth inning Rowan was hit by a pitch and later scored on Walton's single. 
  • With one out in the top of the eighth, Rowan singled for the Eagles and went to third on Brady Burrill's double to center field; however, UWL was not able to score as the next two hitters struck out to end the Eagles threat.
  • In the ninth inning, Ramos led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Sam Viniard pinch hit and reached on a fielding error that allowed Ramos to score to make it 3-2 but that would be all of the scoring for the Eagles as Viniard was caught stealing for the second out and Evan Schmidt flew out to center to end the game. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • UWL finished with five runs on eight hits and six walks in game one.
  • Walton and Calico would each finish with two hits and drive in a run to lead the Eagles offensively. . 
  • Deprez (5-1) came on in relief to pitch the final 5.0 innings to earn his team high fifth win of the season. Deprez not give up a run while allowing just three hits while recording two strike outs. Ethan Pettis  started for the Eagles and allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five in 4.0 innings of work. 
  • UW-Eau Claire finished the first game with three runs on six hits and three walks. 
  • Aaron Skrypek (1-2) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in 6.1 innings.  
  • Johnson led the Blugolds offensively as he was 2-for-3, HR, two RBIs and a run scored. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with two runs on seven hits in game two.
  • Walton was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Rowan finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Aaron Schwechler (1-1) allowed three runs on one hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in 0.1 innings of work to suffer the loss. Evan Brown (4.2 innings) and Austin Olla (3.0 innings) came on in relief to combine for 7.2 innings of scoreless baseball. 
  • UW-Eau Claire finished the second game with three runs on five hits and five walks. 
  • Sebastian De la toba (4-0) picked up the complete game win on the mound as he allowed two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out eight. 
  • Diego Caicedo drove in two runs as he finished 1-for-4 to lead the Blugolds while Kellen Smith was 2-for-4.
