Baseball Picks Up Two WIAC Wins With Sweep Of UW-River Falls; Pettis And Vrbancic Throw Shutout; Viniard Records Seven Hits

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team picked up their first two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) wins of the season on Saturday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader with UW-River Falls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UWL wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they scored two runs in the first inning. Chris Calico led off with a single and stole second base before advancing to third on a fly out to right field by Charley Rowan. Calico then scored on Brady Lash's single to right center. Then with two outs, Lash advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Sam Viniard's single. 
  • UWL added a run in the second inning on a sacrifice bunt by Rowan which scored Keegan Fleischmn from third. Earlier in the inning Fleischman singled and advanced to third on Calico's single.  
  • Brady Burrill led off the third inning with his second home run of the season to make it 4-0. Viniard followed that with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Luke Walton walked, they both moved up on a two base throwing error which made it 5-0. Walton then scored when Emiliano Ramos reached on a throwing error while Rowan's single scored Calico to make it 7-0.
  • UW-River Falls would score a run in the top of the fifth on a single by John Santelman which scored Tanner Hraby.
  • The Eagles would get that run back (8-1) in their half of the fifth on Rowan's single which scored Fleischman who had singled to lead off the inning. 
  • A three-run home run by Kaleb Zabielski would cut the Falcons deficit to 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Then in the seventh, Rowan and Lash led off with singles before advancing on a balk to second and third. With one out, Rowan scored on a wild pitch while Lash came in on Viniards single to put UWL up 10-4. Andrew Palm and Walton both singled to load the bases before Fleischman walked to force Viniard in. Ramos would then hit a sacrifice fly to put to make it 12-4 in favor of the Eagles. 
  • An RBI double by Max Krebs in the top of the Eighth scored Carter Klein for the Falcons to make it 12-5. 

    Game Two
  • Again the Eagles would score first as Viniard led off with a walk and advanced to third on Fleischman's single. Fleischamn would then steal second base and Viniard would come into score on a Falcon error. 
  • Calico led off the third inning with a single to center and then stole second base with one out. A Lash single and a Palm double would bring in two runs to put UWL up 3-0. 
  • UWL would add two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to lead 7-0. In the fourth, Ramos drove in a run with a single that scored Walton. Calvin Hargrove would score the second run of the inning as he scored on a passed ball. In the fifth with one out, Viniard singled and went to third on Fleischman's double. Walton followed that with a single to right center to score both Viniard and Fleischman. 
  • Rowan and Lash would both walk with one out in the sixth inning. Then with two outs, Viniard singled to left which scored Rowan but Lash was thrown out on the plate at home as UWL now led 8-0.
  • Viniard would drive in his fourth run of the day with a single in the Eighth to score Matthew Sonnenschein to put UWL up 9-0.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 12 runs on 16 hits and seven walks. 
  • Viniard (4-for-5, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored) and Rowan (3-for-5, 3 RBIs and a run scored) led the Eagles offense while Fleischman finished 2-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored and an RBI. 
  • Calico also recorded a multi-hit game for the Eagles as he finished 2-for-4 with two walks and a run scored. 
  • Chayce Osterhaus (2-0) earned his second win of the season as he allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work. Logan Zickert (S,1) came on in relief as he pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out four. 
  • UW-River Falls scored five runs on 12 hits and three walks.
  • Zabielski led the Falcon offense as he finished 3-for-4 with a home run, 3 RBIs and a run scored. . 
  • Shaun Gavin (2-1) suffered the loss for the Falcons as he allowed seven runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out five in 4.0 innings of work. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with nine runs on 12 hits and four walks in game two. 
  • Viniard (3-for-4, with a walk, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored) and Fleischman (2-for-3, with a stolen base and a run scored) each finished with their second multi-hit game of the day. 
  • Walton was also 1-for-2 with a walk, 2 RBIs and a run scored. 
  • Ethan Pettis (2-0) pitched seven shutout innings to earn his second win of the season. Pettis gave up four hits and a walk while striking out nine.
  • The Falcons offense finished with six hits and two walks as a team. 
  • Vaughn Johnson (2-1) suffered the loss for the Falcons as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.0 innings.
