UWL Splits Opening Games in Florida; Falls to Plymouth State; Defeats Hiram

Clermont, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team started its spring break with a split Saturday. The Eagles lost, 3-0 to Plymouth State University (N.H.), but bounced back with a 7-3 victory over Hiram College (Ohio).  

UWL is now 2-4 on the season.  

In the loss against Plymouth State (N.H), the Panthers scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Eva Luber got the scoring started as she singled down the right side with Addison Willett scoring. Kiera Larson scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Kennedy Michaud's RBI double scored Avery Couch for a 3-0 lead.   

Brynne Bieri (0-2) suffered the loss, pitching 4.0 innings giving up two runs and three hits with four strikeouts. Carmen Follette pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run and three hits.  

Ava Quinlan and Amber Gonzalez had two hits for UWL.  

In the win against Hiram (Ohio), the Terriers started the scoring with a run in the second inning as Daynna Mekaru singled to score Avery Contini. 

UWL bounced back in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Carly Gross was hit-by-pitch with bases-loaded to score Madalynn Frederixon. Gonzalez delivered a two-run single knocking in Bree Holmes and Josie Flom to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Quinlan's single scored Gross to make it 4-1. Marissa Pease's solo home run in the top of the fifth extended UWL's lead to 5-1. 

Hiram (Ohio) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a Haven Papineau double and Ari Torres' single.  

The Eagles added to their lead in the seventh, scoring two runs on an error with Pease and Laci Heppell scoring. 

Claire Springer (1-1) earned the win. She pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three runs and three hits with three strikeouts. Kaeley Niemiec started the game, pitching 3.0 innings while allowing two runs and three hits with one strikeout.  

Pease led the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and RBI. Gonzalez and Kasey Brouchoud also finished 3-for-4 with Gonzalez having a double and two RBI. 

Clark Yasmine took the loss for the Terriers, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. Mekaru went 2-for-2 with an RBI while Papineau finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.  

UWL returns to action Sunday, March 15 against Clarkson University (N.Y.) at 1:45 p.m. (Central) and SUNY Brockport (NY) at 3:45 p.m.
