Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Night With Win Over UW-Stevens Points; Welsch and Janke Lead Eagles Offense

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team celebrated senior night with a 64-61 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon.

Next Up: The Eagles go on the road for their next game as they travel to Oshkosh to take on the Titans of UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, February 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. UW-Oshkosh defeated UWL 55-48 back on January 7th at Mitchell Hall. Paige Seckar led the Titans with 17 points and 10 rebounds while the Eagles were led by Grace Knupp with 12 points.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • The two teams would trade baskets to start the game until Molly Janke hit a jumper followed by a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 16-12 lead with 4:11 left in the first quarter. The score remained that way until the final possession as Jenna Welsch hit a jumper as time expired to UWL a 18-12 lead heading into the second quarter. 
  • The Eagles opened the second quarter with a 9-4 run to extend UWL's lead to 27-16 with 3:01 left in the half. Lindsey Knuth would spark the Eagles run with five points. UW-Stevens Point would slowly chip away at their deficit as they cut it to 32-26 with 1:12 remaining. Welsch would hit a layup for the Eagles with :03 remaining but Laney Panich would hit a half court shot as time expired to make trim UWL's lead to 35-29 at the half. 
  • UW-Stevens Point came out of the locker room and scored eight of the first 10 points to tie the game at 37. Malia Nelson's three-pointer would put UWL back on top at 40-37 with 6:24 on the clock. After Ali Sprangers jumper made it 44-42 in favor of the Eagles, the Pointers scored the six of the final eight points of the third quarter to lead 48-46. 
  •  Knupp would open the third quarter with a three-pointer to put UWL up 49-48. Karissa Smith gave the Pointers a 59-56 lead with a three-pointer but Nelson's layup followed by Janke's three-pointer put UWL up 61-59 with 2:56 remaining in the game. Lily Truchon's layup for the Pointers would tie the game at 61 (2:34) but UWL would go three-of-four from the free throw to seal the win. The Pointers would have a three-point attempt with :01 remaining but were unsuccessful.

  • As a team, the Eagles finished 25-of-61 (41.0%) from the floor including six-of-22 (27.3%) from the three-point line. UWL was also an impressive eight-of-11(72.7%) from the free throw line.
  • Welsch and Janke each scored 15 points to lead the Eagles offensively while Knupp added 12 points, five rebounds, and two assists. 
  • Janke finished with a team high 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. 
  • Welsch added six rebounds while Lindsey Knuth finished with five to help give the Eagles a 42-36 advantage on the boards. 
  • UW-Stevens Point would shoot 25-of-62 (40.3%) from the floor including eight-of-24 (33.3%) from the three-point line. The Pointers were also three-of-10 (30.0%) from the free throw line. 
  • Rice led the Pointers with 18 points while Smith added 11 points.
