Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 97-75 loss at UW-Stevens Point Saturday night at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Eagles, ranked 19th on this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and in the NCAA Power Index (NPI), drop to 17-6 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pointers, ranked 18th on D3hoops.com and 13th in the NPI, improve to 18-5 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
UWL had won the previous 15 meetings with UW-Stevens Point. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
The Pointers scored the first nine points of the game with seven points from Seth Miron. A Grant Manz layup gave UW-Stevens Point a 18-5 lead, but an 8-0 run by UWL cut the deficit to 18-13 on a
Ben Goedheer jumper with 12:24 remaining in the first half.
Max Raimer's free throw gave the Pointers a 19-13 lead when the Eagles used a 7-0 run to take their first lead at 20-19 with 10:21 left on
Carter Wollan's three-point field goal. UW-Stevens Point led, 33-31 with 4:22 remaining when it went on a 16-4 run to end the half and extend its lead to 49-35.
UW-Stevens Point took a 62-40 lead with 15:20 left. UWL cut it to 64-53 with 12:22 remaining on a
Sam Grieger jumper, but the Eagles could get no closer the rest of the game.
UWL shot 41.2% from the field, including 25.8% (eight-of-31) from three-point range, and 78.1% (25-of-32) at the free throw line.
Grieger led the Eagles with 35 points while adding five rebounds and four assists. He was 11-of-19 from the field, including three-of-nine from three-point range, and 10-of-12 at the line.
Dustin Derousseau finished with 12 points and
JJ Paider 10.
Jacob Butler had a team-high eight rebounds.
UW-Stevens Point shot 60.7% from the field, including 50.0% (12-of-24) from three-point range, and 61.1% (11-of-18) at the line.
Miron led the Pointers with 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Raimer totaled 20 points off the bench. Logan Baumgartner finished with 19 points and Manz 10.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 18 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.
