Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak To Four With Win Over UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Women's Basketball team extended its win streak to four games on Satruday afternoon as they defeated UW-Stevens Point 62-57. The Eagles finish the first half of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 5-2 and are tied for second place.

Next Up: The Eagles will return home on Wednesday, January 28 to host UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. UWL defeated UW-River Falls 52-47 at River Falls on January 3rd.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • The two teams traded baskets in the first quarter as neither team would lead by more than two points as the score was tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter. 
  • UW-Stevens Point would score six of the first seven points of the second quarter to lead 18-13 with 5:53 left in the half. The Eagles would then close the second quarter on a 13-3 run to lead 26-21 at halftime. Freshman Ellie Schiszik and Jenna Welsch would each score five points to spark the run for the Eagles. 
  • Molly Janke's jumper on the Eagles first possession of the second half would extend UWL's lead to 28-23; however, UW-Stevens Point would score five straight points to tie it at 28-28 (7:51). Trailing 34-30, UW-Stevens Point scored eight unanswered to regain the lead at 38-30 with 1:50 remaining in the third quarter. Welsch's two free throws would stop the Pointers run while Janke's back-to-back three-pointers gave the Eagles a 42-38 lead with :23 on the clock. Emma Kilpatrick would hit two free throws with :02 left to make it 42-40 in favor of the Eagles heading into the fourth quarter. 
  • The Pointers scored eight of the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to take a 48-46 lead (7:28). After Malia Nelson's layup for the Eagles tied it at 50, Maija Rice would hit a three-pointer followed by a Jessilyn Ernst put back as the Pointers took a 55-50 lead with 3:47 remaining in the contest. UWL would trail 57-56 with less than a minute to play when Janke hit her third three-pointer of the game to give the Eagles a 59-57 lead and UWL would never trail again. Janke would seal the win for the Eagles by hitting three-of-four free throws.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor including four-of-13 (30.8%) from the three-point line. UWL was also 12-of-16 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
  • Janke led all Eagles with 16 points while also grabbing three rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording two steals.
  • Also finishing in double digits for the Eagles was Nelson with 12 points. 
  • Lindsey Knuth finished with a team high 10 rebounds to go along with five points, three assists and two blocks. 
  • UW-Stevens Point would shoot 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the floor including two-of-13 (15.4%) from the three-point line. The Pointers were also nine-of-10 (90.0%) from the free throw line. 
  • Maija Rice led the Pointers offensively with a team game high 21 points while Jessilyn Ernst added eight points and a team high nine rebounds. 
  • UW-Stevens Point finished with a 37-28 advantage in rebounding.
