Eagles Win A Pair At Wisconsin Lutheran Triangular; Defeats Wisconsin Lutheran and Lake Forest

Wauwatosa, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team won a pair of non-conference matches on Friday night as they defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College and Lake Forest College (Ill.).

UW-La Crosse 3, Wisconsin Lutheran College 2 (21-25, 15-25, 25-13, 25-14, 16-14)
  • With the first set tied 7-7, UWL scored four straight points to take a 11-7 lead. After Wisconsin Lutheran took a 13-12 lead, UWL scored four straight to regain the lead at 16-13. The Eagles would take a 19-15 lead but Wisconsin Lutheran finished the first set on a 10-2 run to win 25-21. 
  • Wisconsin Lutheran College scored the first six points and would extend their lead to 13-4. The Eagles would not be able to recover from the slow start as they would not get any closer than eight the rest of the second set. 
  • UWL would use a 14-2 run to break an 8-8 tie and lead 22-10 in set three. Four service aces by the Eagles including two from Taylor Larson and one each from Megan Lund and Megan Jasperson helped spark the run. UWL would win the third set 25-13. 
  • A 6-1 run with the score tied 9-9 would give the Eagles a 15-10 lead in the fourth set. After Wisconsin Lutheran cut their deficit to 16-13, UWL closed the fourth set on a 9-1 run to force a fifth set with a 25-14 win. Two more service aces from Jasperson jump started the run for the Eagles.
  • Three straight points would give the Eagles an early 6-3 lead in the fifth set. Wisconsin would keep it close as they pulled to within 10-9; however, UWL scored three straight to take a 13-9 lead. Three Wisconsin Lutheran kills and a UWL hitting error would tie the set up at 13-13. After the two teams traded points, UWL would get back-to-back kills from Kayla Sexton and Paige Geiser to seal the fifth set win for the Eagles. 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Sexton led the Eagles with eight kills while tying for the team lead in digs with 13.
  • Lund finished with 16 assists and 13 digs for a double-double.
  • Jasperson and Larson each added 10 digs. 

UW-La Crosse 3, Lake Forest College 1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19)
  • UWL would take an early 6-3 lead in the first set as they would get two kills from Reese Yocum and one each from Grace Nommensen and Maddy Wilson. After Lake Forest tied it at 6-6, UWL scored five of the next seven points to lead 11-7. Leading 15-14, UWL used a 9-1 run to pull away as thy won the first set 25-18. 
  • In the second set, UWL would take a 10-6 lead before Lake Forest chipped away at their deficit and tied it a t14-14. After the two teams traded points and with UWL trailing 17-16, the Eagles scored five straight to take a 17-21 lead. All five Eagles points came off of kills as Nommensen and Grace Turlais each had two kills. Lake Forest would tie it at 21-21 but UWL would get back-to-back points to lead 23-21; however Lake Forest would score the final four points to win the second set 25-23. 
  • After UWL scored the first three points to start the third set, Lake Forest went on a 10-1 run to lead 10-4. UWL slowly battled their way back into the set as they would cut deficit to 19-15. After a Meghan Winston kill put Lake Forest up 20-15, UWL went on a 6-1 run to tie it up at 21-21. A Rio Dirksen kill would give Lake Forest a 22-21 lead but UWL scored the next three points to lead 24-22. Lake Forest would force a UWL hitting error to pull with in one, but Turlais would record the kill to give the Eagles a 25-23 win in set four.
  • UWL would get off to a fast start in set four as they took an early 9-4 lead. Lake Forest would trim their deficit to 11-8 before UWL scored four straight to extend their lead to 15-8. Lake Forest did not go down with out a fight though as they score four straight at one point to pull with 19-17. UWL would then get back-to-back kills from Geiser and Nommensen as well as a service ace from Sexton to put UWL up 23-17. After Lake Forest scored twice, UWL would get a kill from Nommensen and another ace from Larson to give UWL the 25-19 set win. 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Nommensen led the Eagles with 13 kills while Yocum added eight kills and Geiser and Wilson each finished with seven kills.
  • Larson led the Eagles defense with 23 digs while Nommensen finished nine.
  • Lund finished with a team high 19 assists while Kailyn Kurth finished with 13.

  • UWL will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to play in the Loras College (Iowa) Triangular. UWL will play Edgewood University (Wis.) at 2:00 p.m. and Loras College (Iowa) at 4:00 p.m.
