La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team improved to 8-0 on the season with a 5-0 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead (Minn.) Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Cobbers drop to 0-4-3 on the season.
The 8-0 start is the best in school history. UWL won its first seven games in 1999 and 2023.
Monica Wawrzyn recorded one goal and one assist in the win.
UWL scored three goals in the first 12:49 of the game Sunday.
Monica Wawrzyn got the scoring started on
Aubree Caya's assist at 1:23 to make it 1-0. Caya extended the lead to 2-0 at 9:13 off assists from
Jillian Sawadski and Wawrzyn.
Amaya Thesing gave UWL a 3-0 lead at 12:49 on
Jessica Stewart's assist. The Eagles took a 4-0 halftime lead as
Natalia Stadler scored at 36:49, off assists from
Riley Veenendaal and
Sera Speltz.
UWL outshot Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.), 22-0, in the first half. The Eagles had all five of the first half corner kicks.
Speltz finished the scoring at 80:26.
UWL, ranked 16th on this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Top-25 Poll, finished with 36 shots, including 14 on goal.
Grace Williams totaled seven shots with one on goal while
Logan Fritsch had four shots, including one on goal. Caya and Sawadski each had three shots with Caya finishing with one on goal and Sawadski two.
Kaitlyn Kurtz had two shots on goal.
The Eagles finished with 10 corner kicks.
Summer Nicolai (23:49 in goal) and
Robin Blair (66:11) combined for the shutout with Blair registering one save.
Natalia Stadler scored her first goal of the season Sunday.
Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) recorded three saves with one goal. Emma Sheflo finished with two shots. Julia Roark suffered the loss, allowing five goals while recording eight saves. The Cobbers had one team save.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 24 at Carleton College (Minn.) at 4 p.m.
