La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team took nationally ranked UW-Platteville to five sets but was unable to pull off the upset as they fell 3-2 to UW-Platteville on Wednesday night.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
- The Eagles came out on a mission in the first set as they built an early 9-2 lead and never trailed in the first set. After the Pioneers cut their deficit to 11-7, the Eagles quickly extended it back to 17-0 and the Pioneers would not get any closer than five the rest of the set as UWL won the first set 25-19.
- UW-Platteville jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second before UWL would battle back to tie it at 12. The Pioneers then scored six of the next seven points to make it 18-13. Trailing 23-18, UWL got a two kills from Grace Nommensen, a kill from Maddy Wilson and a service ace by Megan Lund to pull the Eagles to within 23-21. A Kennedy Wenger kill for the Pioneers would give UW-Platteville set point but a service error followed by a hitting error would make it 24-23. Kierney McDonald would then seal the win for the Pioneers with a kill as UW-Platteville won set two 25-23.
- In the third set, UWL scored three straight points to take an early 8-7 lead before UW-Platteville scored five straight to lead 12-8. The Pioneers too an 18-16 lead but UWL responded with three straight points to tie it at 18-18. With the score tied at 20-20, UWL go back-to-back kills from Nommensen followed by UW-Platteville hitting error and a Lund service ace to give the Eagles set point at 24-20. UW-Platteville then got two kills from McDonald and two kills from Radecke plus a UWL hitting error to lead 25-24. A Nommensen kill would even the score at 25 but the Pioneers would get a McDonald kill and force a UWL hitting error to with the third set 27-25.
- UWL was not giving in during the fourth set as they scored six of the first seven points to lead 6-1. After UW-Platteville cut their deficit to 10-9, UWL scored six straight to lead 16-9. The Pioneers would slowly chip away at their deficit and pull within 19-18 but UWL would score six of the final eight points to win the fourth set 25-20.
- In the decisive fifth set, UW-Platteville opened the set on a 8-3 run and eventually led 10-4. UWL did not go away quietly as they went on a 6-1 run to trail 11-10. The Pioneer would get a kill by Bria Johnston and force two Eagle hitting errors to give UW-Platteville match point at 14-10. UWL had one final push in them as UW-Platteville committed two errors and UWL got back-to-back kills from Nommensen to tie the set up at 14. An assisted block by McDonald and Kennedey Barber followed by a kill from Wenger would give teh Pioneers a 16-14 win in set five.

- As a team, the Eagles hit .131 and were led by three players in double figures in kills including Nommensen with 13. Joining Nommensen in double figures was Kayla Sexton with 11 kills and Reese Yocum with 10.
- The Eagles defense finished with 90 digs as a team and had five individuals in double figures including Taylor Larson with a match high 22 digs. Also in double figures for the Eagles was Nommensen with 18, Sexton 15, Lund 14 and Kailyn Kurth 13.
- Lund, Kurth and Larson all finished in double digits in assists with 22, 14 and 10, respectively.
- UW-Stout finished hitting .142 as a team with Brooklyn Radecke leading the way with 17 kills and McDonald adding 15.
- Gracie Gibbens finished with 30 assists while Johnston recorded 19 digs for the Pioneers.

- UWL will enjoy a little break in action as they do not return to the court until September 24 when they travel to Eau Claire to take on the Blugolds at 7:00 p.m.
